How the death of a child affects relationships throughout the family from the point of view of bereaved mothers

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce bylo odpovědět na otázku: ,,S jakými změnami v rodinných vztazích se setkávají pozůstalé matky?“ Základem teoretické části bylo vymezení základních pojmů jako rodina, vnitřní vztahy rodiny, smrt dítěte, zármutek, truchlení a změny v rodinných vztazích. Pro nalezení odpovědi na hlavní výzkumnou otázku byla použita kvalitativní strategie výzkumu, technika analýzy životního příběhu. Respondentkami byly pozůstalé matky, které se vypořádávají se ztrátou svého dítěte. Tyto respondentky byly vybrány na základě záměrného výběru. Na základě zjištěných dat byly popsány změny v rodinných vztazích po úmrtí dítěte očima pozůstalých matek, konkrétně změny mezi pozůstalými rodiči a mezi těmito rodiči a přeživšími sourozenci. Z výzkumu můžeme konstatovat, že ztráta dítěte je natolik zdrcující, že pozůstalé provází celým jejich životem. Smrt dítěte vyvolala změny mezi pozůstalými rodiči i mezi nimi a přeživšími sourozenci. Z výzkumného šetření vyplývá, že pozůstalí rodiče měli různorodé vztahy, některé byly zcela funkční, jiné naopak. Většinově se shodují v tom, že bezprostředně po úmrtí dítěte se jejich vztah zhoršil, partnery tato událost vzdálila. I vztahy s dětmi byly zpočátku funkční, otevřené a přátelské, přičemž po této události se převážně zhoršily. Ve výzkumu se ukázalo, že na každého člena rodiny působila tato událost jiným způsobem.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to answer the question: „What changes occured in family relationships for bereaved mothers, after the death of their child?“ The theoretical part focuses on the identification of key terms, such as family, inner family relationships, death of a child, sorrow, grieving and the changes of relationships throughout the family after the death of a child. To answer the core hypotesis of this thesis I used qualitative research strategies and biographical analysis. The respondents were bereaved mothers who were coping with the loss of a child. The choice of the respondents was based on purposive sampling. In the practical part of the thesis I describe the changes in family realtionships after a death of a child from the point of view of bereaved mothers, especially changes in the relationships between bereaved parents and between the parents and surviving children. These changes were based on the data gained during the research. The research shows that the loss of a child is a traumatic event, which has a life-long effect on bereaved parents and siblings. The death of a child causes changes in relationships between bereaved parents and between parents and remained siblings. The research shows that no matter how functional or dysfunctional the relationship between parents before the death of the child, nearly all relationships worsen after the death. Also, relationships with surviving children which were funtional, open and friendly before the death, deteriorate after it. The research shows that this traumatic event affected each member of a family differently.
