Expansion of Logistics Services in Emerging Markets

Abstract:

Ve snaze se být konkurenceschopnější na trhu, mnoho společností které působí v odvětví výrobního průmyslu, rozšiřuji své činnosti ve rozvíjejících se trzích, kde mají počáteční nižší náklady, a nižší náklady na práci a materiál. Nicméně, výroba daleko od země původu muže ovlivnit jejich konkurenceschopnost, kvůli zvýšenému nákladů na logistiku, čas doručení, a složitosti správy mezinárodních operací. Ve snaze přežít, tyto společnosti musí mít buď obrovské mezinárodní zkušenosti, nejlépe z rozvíjejících se trhů, nebo dobrý plán jak získat některé z místní "konkurence", nebo najmout spolehlivého a zkušeného poskytovatele logistických služeb, který bude pečovat o dané činnosti a procesy. Se zvyšujícím se výskytem nových výrobních společností na rozvíjejících se trzích, poptávka po spolehlivém zásobování poskytovatelů řetězce služeb se zvyšuje, což se odráží ve stejném trendu logistických společností stěhovat se do těchto zemí. Při vstupu do zemí rozvíjejících se trhů, jsou poskytovatelé logistických služeb nuceni pracovat v podmínkách nerozvinuté dopravních a ICT infrastruktury a složitých a nejasných pravidel a regulací. Díky stále se zvyšujícímu množství zboží a služeb vyžadovaných rychle rostoucí střední třídou, budou výrobci stále více rozšiřovat své operace v rozvíjejících se trzích, za účelem být blíže k zákazníkům. To bude mít za následek zvýšenou poptávku po dopravní infrastruktuře a logistických službách, zejména v rozvíjejících se trzích, které jsou považovány za další cíl pro globální výrobní společnosti. Nicméně, rozšíření regionální, městské a venkovské infrastruktury, nebude nikdy plně odpovídat poptávce na trhu, dokonce ani do roku 2030. Je velmi pravděpodobné, že velké mezinárodní logistické společnosti, pocházející z rozvinutých zemí budou mít stále vedoucí postavení na trhu i v rozvíjejících se zemích. Úloha vlády se bude i nadále zvyšovat, protože ekonomika v rozvíjejících se trzích se zvyšuje, což znamená, že regulační opatření, jako jsou poplatky za výběr mýtného bude mít zásadní význam. Realizace těchto nařízení by měla odpovídat nabídce a poptávce na dopravní infrastrukturu, a to snížením zbytečné dopravy a uhlíkové stopy v životním prostředí, a zároveň vytvářet finanční prostředky, které mohou být re-investovány do vývoje nové dopravní infrastruktury. To může jen přispět k důležitosti role vlády při investiciích do nové dopravní infrastruktury, ačkoliv nejspíše nebudou mít dostatečné množství kapitálu. Odborníci ze stavebnictví tvrdí, že vlády musí nalézt rovnováhu mezi výdaji na investice do nové infrastruktury a údržbu stávající, což znamená, že rozpočet na budování nové dopravní infrastruktury musí zahrnovat také prostředky na údržbu infrastruktury existující. Mnoho z budoucích projektů, týkajících se vnitrostátní a mezinárodní dopravní infrastruktury budou pocházet od soukromých investorů, výměnou za obchodní podíl. Dobře vyvinutá dopravní infrastruktura, která umožní snažší dopravu pro komplexní dodavatelské řetězce, je zcela jistě klíčovým faktorem pro konkurenceschopnost rozvíjejících zemí a schoposnost absorbovat zahraniční investice, a také jako klíčový determinant ekonomické prosperity země. Kromě toho země, které budou také schopny udržovat moderní ICT infrastrukturu, získají nejvíce přímých zahraničních investic a ekonomické prosperity. Důvodem je, že informační a komunikační technologie (ICT), budou klíčové pro rozvoj příští generace infrastruktury dopravy a různé dopravní prostředky. ikátní a automatizovaných logistických procesů, které budou modernizovat zásobovací řetězce. Tím, že nabízí dobré podmínky pro vstup, mohou některé z nově se rozvíjejících oblastí přilákat mnoho poskytovatelů logistických služeb, které se budou podílet na rozvoji dopravní infrastruktury a infrastruktury ICT. Nicméně, nárust dopravní infrastruktury, bude mít dopad na životní prostředí, a ohrozí udržitelnost a ochranu životního prostředí. To povede k vztváření předpisů, aby se vyvinul tlak na poskytovatele logistických služeb s cílem snížit emise skleníkových plynů v životním prostředí. V budoucnu se očekává, že náklady na životní prostředí se jistě stanou součástí nákladů na infrastrukturu, a tedy nákladů na logistiku. Dále to bude výzva pro poskytovatele logistických služeb začít zvažovat více ekologicky šetrné dopravní řešení, která bude emitovat méně skleníkových plynů v životním prostředí. Ceny ropy budou dalším rizikem pro odvětví logistiky, což obrátí pozornost na výzkum v oblasti alternativních zdrojů energie. I když se využití alternativních zdrojů energie bude zvyšovat, není očekáván velký obrat v oblasti dopravy a logistiky. Pro další vývoj budou potřeba významné technologické změny, ale některým z nich může být zabráněno z politických důvodů. Celkově lze říci, že zvyšování cen ropy a zvýšení povědomí o životním prostředí přispěje ke snížení emisí skleníkových plynů do životního prostředí. V souvislosti s tím se očekává, že na cestě k minimalizaci dopadů na životní prostředí bude potřeba motivovat orgány, aby spustily systémy, které budou sledovat emise, a následně je přiřadily k jednotlivým původcům znečištění. Objeví se tak nová obchodní příležitost pro poskytovatele logistických služeb – měření emisí oxidu uhličitého a přiřazování ke svým klientům jako součást nákladů na poskytované služby. Kromě toho může vzniknout příležitost pro poskytovatele logistických služeb, jak rozšířit své služby nabídkou různých "zelených produktů" (každý s různým dopadem na životní prostředí), které by měly zvýšit povědomí o vlivu klientů na životní prostředí. V pokročilejších rozvíjejících se trzích se tak může objevit odpověď na požadavek zákazníka na více udržitelné výrobky a zákazníci si tak budou moci vybrat, jak velká část dodávky nového notebooku bude škodit životnímu prostředí – například tím, že má možnost vybrat si z několika dopravních prostředků. Ještě více firem se bude zajímat o svou trvalou udržitelnost; výroční zprávu o udržitelnost společnosti budou zveřejňovat povinně. Díky tomu, že se objevuje více ekologicky šetrných spotřebitelů, očekává se, že v dlouhodobém horizontu poptávka po logistických službách může klesat v důsledku přání zákazníka na lokálně vyráběné výrobky, které nevyžadují komplexní dopravu a vyšší znečištění životního prostředí. Preference spotřebitelů se budou nadále měnit, a to i s rozvíjející se spotřební třídou, což povede k velké účasti zákazníků v logistickém procesu. Na straně poskytovatelů logistických služeb splnění takových nároků vyžaduje velké investice do automatizace a digitalizace současných procesů, je nutno přiblížit se zákazníkovi prostřednictvím vlastního on-line rozhraní. To bude další výzvou pro poskytovatele logistických služeb a zároveň se budou muset vyrovnat s poptávkou po levnějších službách, snižující se celkovou poptávkou v důsledku upřednostňování místních produktů a s náklady na informační a komunikační technologie. Cílem bude umožnit zákazníkům větší zapojení do logistického procesu, avšak zákazníci nebudou souhlasit se zyšujícími se cenami logistických služeb, prohlašovat, že integrace informačních a komunikačních technologií by měla být součástí standardní nabídky. Poptávka individuálních a obchodních cestujících bude klesat, také z důvodu současné globální finanční krize. Více lidí se rozhodne strávit svou dovolenou doma, což zvýší poptávku po on-line digitálních zážitcích během volného času, a v podnicích se bude zvyšovat poptávka po telekonferenčních systémech jako jedné z cest, jak ušetřit na cestovních výdajích. Vedle těchto moderních nástrojů budou muset výrobci přemýšlet nad umístěním svých logistických center tak, aby snižovali energie potřebné k transportu a také nad efektivnějším dodavatelským řetězcem, kde spotřebovaná energie bude mít prioritu před rychlostí. V současné době je taková strategie silně podporovaná na moderních rozvíjejících se trzích, kde existuje vyšší povědomí o životním prostředí než ve zbytku rozvíjejících se trhů. Pro výrobce se rozvíjející se trhy stávají stále více atraktivními, výrobní firmy zde vidí výborné investiční příležitosti a poskytovatelé logistických služeb se budou muset přesouvat do nových zemí za nimi. To povede k vytváření nových dopravních koridorů, z nichž některé se budou nacházet na rozvíjejících se trzích v Asii a některé budou připojeny na rozvíjející se trhy vyspělých ekonomik. Některé rozvíjející se země jako Turecko, Rusko a Jižní Afrika, vzhledem ke své zeměpisné poloze, budou hrát velmi důležitou roli při vytváření nových obchodních koridorů, které slouží jako vstupní body do asijských rozvíjejících se trhů nebo jako spojení mezi Evropou a Asií. Kromě toho se budou vytvářet nové obchodní koridory také mezi Asií a Afrikou, Asií a Jižní Amerikou, v asijských zemích navzájem, což významně zvýší celkový objem globálního obchodu, a to zejména na rozvíjející se trzích a nejméně v rozvinutých zemích, aby byla zaměřena na potřeby nové střední třídy. Tento stav bude zejména viditelný a prohlubovaný v Číně s největším počtem obyvatel a v Indii s nejrychleji rostoucí populací na světě. Nicméně, z hlediska dostupnosti dopravní infrastruktury se Čína se řadí na 27. místo v logistickém Indexu výkonu Světové banky (World Bank Logistics Performance Index), i když se na jejím území nachází sedm z dvaceti největších světových přístavů. Kromě toho je Čína také největším obchodním partnerem Brazílie a velmi důležitým trhem pro většinu z jeho nových sousedů, jako jsou Malajsie a Indonésie. Ve všech těchto zemích jsou v současné době spuštěny velké projekty pro rozvoj infrastruktury a vytvoření spolehlivých obchodních koridorů, a to především proto, že se stále více stávají hlavními dodavateli surovin do Číny. Kromě rozvoje dopravní infrastruktury a nových obchodních koridorů, vládní nařízení musí být následně změněna také na podporu zvýšení obchodních toků a podpořit nové subjekty na trhu, ať už z výroby nebo v logistice. Jednou z důležitých změn v právních předpisech, které mohou urychlit hospodářský růst v rozvíjejících se trzích je přesun kapitálu od státních podniků do soukromých společností. Ačkoli tyto změny jsou obtížné pro rozvíjející se trhy, mnoho z těchto zemí již provádí privatizaci některých svých státních podniků. Takové změny jsou silně podporované Mezinárodním měnovým fondem a Světovou bankou, a budou sloužit jako podmínky pro obdržení dotace na rozvoj nových dopravních a logistických projektů. V rámci privatizace na rozvíjejících se trzích, se bude úloha vlád podstatně změnit, z aktivního hráče na trhu, na pozorovatele, který bude jen podporovat transparentnost a hospodářskou soutěž na trhu. Kromě toho budou vlády hrát důležitou roli v rozvoji zóny volného obchodu, a získávání přímých zahraničních investorů, což navíc podpoří hospodářský růst. Navíc se poptávka po kurýrních, expresních a balíkových a logistických služeb rovněž zvýší v důsledku změny v demografii, a stále rostoucí střední třídy na rozvíjejících se trzích. Proto musí nízkonákladoví poskytovatelé logistických služeb zlepšit rozsah svých služeb, a přistoupit k některým z inovačních nebo ekologicky šetrných výrobků, v zájmu udržení konkurenceschopnosti na trhu. Budoucí prognózy ukazují, že rozvíjející se trhy budou stále více vnímány jako příležitost pro investice, ačkoliv počet poskytovatelů logistických služeb na rozvíjejících se trzích již překročil více než desítky tisíc, od živnostníků až po velké nadnárodní společnosti. Většina z nich nabízí různé služby, některé z nich přímo či nepřímo navzájem konkurují. To neznamená, že poptávka po logistických službách na rozvíjejících se trzích je obrovská, ale v posledních dvou letech se poptávka na trhu dostala až k bodu, který vede ke konsolidaci odvětví. Nicméně, konsolidace odvětví je považována za přirozený proces, navíc zásadní k dosažení úspor z rozsahu. V souvislosti s procesem dosažení úspor z rozsahu, některé firmy z rozvíjejících se trhů začínají vstupovat do rozvinutých ekonomik, viděno jako příležitost k růstu jejich podnikání. Nicméně, toto nemůže být případ s firmami z odvětví logistiky na rozvíjejících se trzích. Například, jen jediná čínská společnost (Čínské dráhy) je na seznamu Fortune Global 500 companies. To znamená, že poskytovatelé logistických služeb z rozvíjejících se trhů stále nejsou hlavními hráči v globálním odvětví dopravy a logistiky. Nicméně, protože ekonomika roste v rozvíjejících se trzích mnohem rychleji než ve vyspělých, měly by se místní poskytovatelé logistických služeb soustředit na růst podílu na místním trhu, a možná i na uspokojování poptávky na sousedních rozvíjejících se trzích. Kromě toho by se měly zaměřit na rozšíření jejich schopností spolupráce s nadnárodními společnostmi, což umožní udržet a zlepšit jejich konkurenceschopnost a vytvořit prostor pro růst. Jak bylo uvedeno výše, rozvíjející se trhy představují velkou příležitost pro poskytovatele logistických služeb, která přináší výhody pro ty, kterým se podaří využít ji dříve, než ostatní. Smyslem této práce bude definovat rozvíjející se trhy, identifikovat, analyzovat a vyhodnotit příležitosti, které existují pro budoucí vývoj odvětví logistiky, a doporučit nejvhodnější strategii pro poskytovatelů logistických služeb, které mají zájem vstoupit do těchto trzích, a využít možností. K tomu byla použita Baltic Dry Index metodika pro vytvoření přehledu o globální poptávky po surovinách a dopravní infrastruktury, a pak dále určuje poptávku, nabídku a cenu logistických služeb (Dry bulk). Kromě toho byly analyzovány, v části věnované skupině sedmi nejvyspělejších rozvíjejících se trhů, politické, ekonomické, sociální a technologické faktory rozvíjejících se trhů v kombinaci s klíčovými faktory, které vedou k úspěchu poskytovatelů logistických služeb na rozvíjejících se trzích. Na základě již známých faktorů byla provedena analýza vnitřního a vnějšího prostředí poskytovatelů logistických služeb na rozvíjejících se trzích, prostřednictvím analýzy silných a slabých stránek, příležitostí a hrozeb (SWOT analýza). SWOT analýza byla rozšířena o Porterův model pěti sil, použitého k měření úrovně konkurenceschopnosti na trhu a odhadu nadějí na úspěch. To sloužilo jako základ pro poskytnutí nejvhodnější strategie vstupu na trh v kombinaci s volbou vhodného marketingového mixu (4Ps) výrobku, místa, ceny a propagace poskytovatelů logistických služeb, a aby uspokojili poptávku vhodně na rozvíjejících se trzích.

Abstract:

In a constant seek to be more competitive on the market; many companies from the manufacturing sector follow the trend of expanding their operations in the emerging markets, where they are blessed with low startup costs, and lower labor and material cost. However, manufacturing away from their main land is challenging their competiveness, due to the increased logistics costs, delivery time, and complexity to manage such international operations. In order to survive that, those companies need to have either international experience preferably insights from the emerging markets, or a good plan how to partner up or acquire some of the local “competitors”, or to contract reliable and experienced logistics service provider that will take care of their operations and processes. With the increased presence of new manufacturing companies in the emerging markets, the demand for reliable supply chain service providers is increasing, reflecting the same trend of migrating towards the emerging markets as in the logistics sector. When the logistics service providers are the ones entering foreign markets, their most often entry strategy is acquiring or partnering up with local logistics company, due to the fact that mastering the local know-how is the core of their business. Further upon the entry, logistics service providers are challenged to target the needs of the emerging middle class, to operate in conditions of underdeveloped transport and ICT infrastructures, and complex and unclear regulations. As the quantity of goods and services required to serve the world’s rapidly growing middle class in the emerging markets, manufacturers will increasingly expand their operations in the emerging markets, for the purpose of being closer to the customers and having access to lower cost resources. This will result in increased demand for transport infrastructure and logistics services, especially in the emerging markets which are considered as the next destination for the global manufacturing companies, coupled with the increasing flow of goods and people. However, the extension of the regional, urban, and rural infrastructure, will never fully meet the market demand, even not by 2030. From the logistics sector, it is most likely that the large international companies originating from the developed countries will still remain market leaders also in the emerging markets. The role of the governments will continue to increase as the economy in the emerging markets increases, meaning that regulatory measures such as road toll charges will be crucial. The implementation of such regulations is expected to match the supply and demand for transport infrastructure, by reducing the unnecessary traffic and the carbon footprint in the environment, and in the same time to generate funds that may be re-invested for development of new transport infrastructure. These may just contribute to the role of the governments to invest in new transport infrastructure; however the governments will be still facing challenges to supply sufficient capital for such infrastructure projects, which will have impact on the logistics industry, and the economy as a whole. Before entering one market, logistics service providers need to completely understand that market, considering not only the available transport infrastructure, but also the willingness of the government to invest in new and maintain the existing transport infrastructure. Experts from the construction industry claim that governments need to balance the spending between investments in new infrastructure and maintenance of the existing one, meaning that the budget for building new transportation infrastructure shall include also funds for maintenance of the same, once it is build. Many of the future projects, concerning national and international transport infrastructure will be sourced by private investors, in exchange for business share like part of the road tools charged, however the local one will be still

under responsibility of the authorities. Having well developed transport infrastructure which can facilitate complex supply chains, is certainly a critical factor for the competitiveness of one emerging country to absorb foreign investments, and also as a key determinant of the country’s economic prosperity. In addition, those countries that will be as well capable to implement ICT infrastructure, will benefit the most in regards to foreign direct investments and economic prosperity. The reason is that the information and communication technology (ICT) will be the key enabler for the development of next generation transport infrastructure and various means of transport. In addition, the ICT will increasingly contribute towards development of unique and automated logistics processes that will modernize the supply chains making them more integrated and closer to the client. By offering good entry conditions, some of the emerging regions may accommodate many of the logistics service providers, which will additionally challenge the development of transport and ICT infrastructure. However, additional transport infrastructure will impact the environment, and it will challenge the sustainability and the environmental awareness of the authorities and the logistics service providers. This will lead to implementation of regulations, which will have a purpose to put pressure to the logistics service providers to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions in the environment. In future, it is expected that the environmental costs will certainly become part of the infrastructure costs, and consequently the logistics costs. Further, this will challenge the logistics service providers to start considering more eco friendly transportation solutions that will emit less greenhouse gasses in the environment and that will reduce the dependency on scarce resources, such as the oil. The skyrocketing oil prices will be another risk for the logistics sector, putting the attention on various researches in the area of alternative energy. Although the usage of alternative energy will increase, major energy turnaround is not expected to occur in the transportation and logistics industry. However, this will drive significant technological change, some of which may be prevented due to political reasons. Overall, the oil price increase and the increased environmental awareness, will contribute to reduction in the emission of greenhouse gasses in the environment. In regards to this, it is expected that the drive towards minimizing the environmental impact will motivate the authorities to put into action systems which will monitor the emissions and consequently allocate them to the causer. This may serve as a business opportunity for the logistics service providers, to measure their carbon emissions, and allocate them to their clients as part of the cost for the service provided. In addition, this may be an opportunity for the logistics service providers to differentiate their service offering by including various green products, each with different environmental impact, which is expected to increase the environmental awareness of the clients. In more advanced emerging markets, this may be an answer to the client’s demand for more sustainable products, to be able to choose for example how much the delivery of their new notebook will pollute the environment, by having an opportunity to select from several means of delivery. Even more the companies will be concerned with their sustainability, as it will become compulsory to publish annual sustainability report, which will be also reflected in their supply chains. The fact that more eco friendly consumers are emerging, it is expected that in long term the demand for logistics services may decline, as a result of the customer’s preference for locally made products, which does not require complex transportation and pollution of the environment. This means that the consumer preferences will continue to change, even with the emerging consumer class, which will lead to great involvement of the customers in the logistics process. On the side of the logistics service providers, satisfying such demands will require large investments in automation and digitalization of the current processes, bringing them closer to the client through custom online interfaces. This will be an additional challenge for the logistics service providers, as in the same time they will have to cope with the demand for lower priced services, the possibility that the demand may decrease as a result of the preference for local products, and the cost of the ICT in order to enable the customers greater involvement in the logistics process. On top of it, customers will not accept increase in the price levels of the logistics services, claiming that the integration of ICT should be part of the standard offering. In addition, despite the delivery process, the demand for individual and business traveling will change as well, as a result of the recent global financial crises. More people will decide to spend their holidays at home, which will increase the demand for online digital experience of leisure location, and for the businesses, the demand for tele-presence systems will increase as a means to save on traveling expenses. Led by these assumptions, both the manufacturers followed by the logistics service providers, will set their production sites / logistics hubs in locations where the minimum consumption of energy is required to design effective supply chain, whereby the energy efficiency will be prioritized before the speed. Currently, such strategy is strongly supported by the advanced emerging markets, whose environmental awareness is on a slightly higher level than in the rest of the emerging markets. As the emerging markets are increasingly becoming investment opportunity for the manufacturing sector, large number of international logistics service providers will be challenged to follow them by extending their global networks with new hubs and spokes in the emerging markets. This will lead to creation of new transport corridors, some of which within the Asia emerging markets, and some to connect the emerging markets to the developed economies. Some emerging countries like Turkey, Russia and South Africa, due to their geographic position will play very important role in the creation of the new trade corridors, serving as entry points to the Asian emerging markets, or as a link between Europe and Asia. In addition, new trade corridors will also emerge between Asia and Africa, Asia and South America, and within Asia itself, significantly increasing the overall global trade volume, especially towards the emerging markets and the least developed countries, to target the needs of the new middle class. This will especially intensify in China with the world’s largest population and in India with the world fastest growing population. However, in terms of availability of transport infrastructure, China being ranked on the 27 place on the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index and home to seven of the world’s twenty largest ports, is leading over India. In addition, China is also the largest trading partner of Brazil, and very important market for most of its emerging neighbors, like Malaysia and Indonesia. All these countries are currently undergoing large infrastructure development projects and establishment of reliable trade corridors, mainly because they increasingly become main suppliers of raw materials to China. Besides the development of transport infrastructure and new trade corridors, the governmental regulations need to be subsequently altered to support the model of increased trade flows and encourage new market entrants, whether from the manufacturing or logistics sector. One important change in the regulations that may accelerate the economic growth in the emerging markets is the shift of the capital from state owned enterprises to private companies. Although these changes are difficult for the emerging markets, many of these countries are already privatizing some state owned enterprises however some are still lacking behind. Such changes are strongly supported by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, and serve as conditions for receiving new development grants, directed in the transportation and logistics projects. As part of the privatization efforts in the emerging markets, the role of the governments will substantially change, from active market player to observer, which will additionally encourage transparency and competition on the market. In addition, the governments will play important role in the development of free trade zones, and attracting foreign direct investors, which will additionally encourage economic growth. Further to this, as new market entrants will be joining these free trade zones, the demand for reliable supply chain services will increase, which will bring a wave of logistics service providers setting up new hubs and spokes in the free trade zones to address the increased demand. In addition, the demand for courier, express, and parcel logistics services will also increase as a result of the changes in demographics, and the growing middle class in the emerging markets. Therefore, the low cost logistics service providers will have to improve the scope of their services, and perhaps to implement some innovative or green products, in order to remain competitive on the market. Future projections show that the emerging markets will be increasingly perceived as an opportunity for investment; however the number of logistics service providers in the emerging markets is already exceeding tens of thousands, ranging from one man companies to large multinationals. All of them offer variety of services, some of them directly or indirectly competing with each other. This does not indicate that the demand for logistics services in emerging markets is huge, but that these marketplaces in the last two years becomes overcrowded to a point that leads to consolidation of the industry. However, the industry consolidation is considered as natural process, moreover crucial towards achieving economies of scale. In regards to the process of achieving economies of scale, some companies from the emerging markets will start entering the developed economies, as an opportunity to grow their business. However, this may not be the case with the logistics industry companies from the emerging markets. For example, only one Chinese company (the China Railways) is on the list of Fortune Global 500 companies. This indicates that the logistics service providers from the emerging markets are still not major players in the global transportation and logistics industry. Nevertheless, as the economy grows in the emerging markets much faster than in the developed ones, the local logistics service providers should concentrate on increasing local market share, and perhaps on serving the neighboring emerging markets. In addition, they should keep focusing on enlarging their capabilities and cooperating with multinationals, as this will maintain and improve their competitiveness and provide space for growth. As mentioned above, the emerging markets represent great opportunity for the logistics service providers, that will bring benefit to the ones that will manage to take an advantage of it sooner than the others. The main point of this work will be to define the emerging markets, to identify, analyze and evaluate the opportunities that exist there for future development of the logistics industry, and to recommend best fit strategy for the logistics service providers that are interested to enter these markets, and take advantage of the available opportunities. To do that the Baltic Dry index methodology has been has been used to gives an overview on the global demand for raw materials and transport infrastructure, which than determines the demand, supply and price of the logistics services offered (limited to dry bulk ships). Furthermore, the political, economical, social and technological factors of the emerging markets has been analyzed in the section dedicated on the group of seven most advanced emerging markets, combined with the key factors that lead to success of the logistics service providers in the emerging markets. Based on the already know factors, analysis of the internal and external environment has been conducted, through analyzing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT analysis) of the logistics service providers in the emerging markets. As an extension to the SWOT analysis, the Porter’s Five Forces has been used to measure the level of competitiveness on the market and to predict the possibility of success. This served as basis to provide best fit entry strategy, combined with appropriate Marketing Mix (4Ps) product, place, price, and promotion of the logistics service providers, to enable smooth market entry, and to meet the demand properly in the emerging markets.
