Effectiveness of Educational Intervention in People with Alzheimer's Disease at a Late Start

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou osob trpících Alzheimerovou nemocí při pozdním začátku. Teoretická část je zaměřena na deskripci stáří a stárnutí, Alzheimerovu nemoc a edukační přístupy v rámci ucelené rehabilitace, které lze využít u osob trpících touto formou demence. V empirické části práce jsou prezentovány výsledky vlastního kvalitativního longitudinálního výzkumného šetření metodou single case research design. Pomocí této metody bylo umožněno sledovat rozvoj sledovaných ukazatelů u náhodně vybraných probandů, v tomto případě N = 4. Probandi odpovídali relevantním znakům a byli pravidelně testováni za pomoci standardizovaného Addenbrookského kognitivního testu. Výsledky prokázaly, že desetiměsíční edukační intervence, jež probíhala za využití prvků kognitivní rehabilitace, měla na probandy v oblasti kognitivních funkcí pozitivní vliv. Závěrem práce jsou doporučení pro praxi z pohledu pomáhajících profesí.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on people suffering from late onset Alzheimer's Disease. The theoretical section describes old age, aging, Alzheimer's Disease, and the educational approaches that might be used within a complex rehabilitation plan for people affected by this form of dementia. The empirical section presents the findings of original qualitative longitudinal survey research, based on the single case research design method. This method enabled to monitor the development of the observed indicators in randomly chosen probands (N = 4). The probands exhibited the relevant features and were regularly tested by the standardized Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination. The results have shown that the ten-month-long educational intervention, which incorporated elements of cognitive rehabilitation, had a positive impact on the cognitive functions of the probands. The final section of the thesis provides practical recommendations, as seen from the perspective of helping professionals.
