Reflections on the political and cultural geography of China, Russia and the USA in Czech textbooks in the context of contemporary geopolitical reality

Abstract:

Dizertační práce se zabývá empirickým pohledem na školní geografické vzdělávání se zaměřením na politickou a kulturní geografii, přičemž podoba této edukace je zde rekonstruována na základě kritické analýzy diskurzu, resp. diskurzivně-historického přístupu a obsahové analýzy učebnic určených mládeži od cca 12 do 19 let. Cílem práce je rekonstrukce možných znalostí v rámci vybraných témat regionální geografie tří mocností, Číny, Ruska a USA, a rekonstrukce obrazu, který je v analyzovaných učebnicích vytvářen pro žáky škol odpovídajících současnému stupni 2 a 3 ISCED za posledních 150 let. Výzkum je zaměřen na 3 aspekty: národy (majoritní a minoritní), životní úroveň občanů vyplývající z popisu hospodářství a rozsah učiva o výše uvedených 3 státech. Teoretický rámec celé práce tvoří imaginativní geografie, protože právě geografické imaginace jsou při tvorbě učebnic geografie dominantní - zejména v regionální geografii vzdálených zemí. Definovány jsou dvě výzkumné otázky, každá se třemi dílčími otázkami: 1) Jak dalece ovlivnila tehdejší politická situace rozsah učiva o jednotlivých mocnostech? (1a/ je pravdou, že rozsah učiva je vždy větší v učebnicích pro střední školy ve srovnání s učebnicemi po základní školy?; 1b/ Koreluje rozsah učiva s aktuální světovou významností (hospodářskou, politickou) vybraného státu ve své době?; 1c/ Koreluje rozsah učiva o daném státě se zahraniční politikou našeho státu v daném období? 2) Jak ovlivnila zahraniční politika našeho státu diskurz o třech světových mocnostech v jednotlivých historických obdobích? (2a/ Jak jsou prezentovány majoritní titulární národy, co je exponováno a co naopak opomíjeno, zdeformováno nebo prezentováno s menším významem?; 2b/ Jak jsou prezentovány minority (etnolingvistické, náboženské, rasové aj.), co je exponováno a co naopak opomíjeno, zdeformováno nebo prezentováno s menším významem?; 2c/ Jak je prezentována životní úroveň obyvatelstva v jednotlivých zemích ve zkoumaných obdobích vyplývající z popisu stavu hospodářství? Výzkum ukázal rozdílnost přístupů k výuce politické a kulturní geografie (jako součásti regionální geografie) v jednotlivých historických obdobích, zvláštnosti, kterými byla provázena v době zvratů na světové politické scéně, a ukázal, jak byly znalosti z analytických kategorií konstruovány ve zkoumaném diskurzu pomocí kritické diskurzivní analýzy (CDA). Jelikož zkoumaný objekt výzkumu tvoří učebnice z posledních 150 let, je použita i metodu diskurzivní historické analýzy (DHA), což je jedna z variant CDA, u níž hrají důležitou roli tři koncepty - kritika, moc a ideologie.

Abstract:

The dissertation deals with an empirical view of school geographical education with a focus on political and cultural geography, while the form of this education is reconstructed here on the basis of a critical discourse analysis, specifically discursive-historical approach and content analysis of textbooks intended for youth from about 12 to 19 years. The aim of the work is a reconstruction of possible knowledge in selected topics of regional geography of the three powers, China, Russia and the USA, and the reconstruction of the image, which has been created in the analysed textbooks for pupils of schools corresponding to current ISCED levels 2 and 3 for the last 150 years. The research is focused on 3 aspects: nations (majority and minority), the standard of living of citizens resulting from the description of the economy and the scope of the curriculum on the above 3 states. The theoretical framework of the whole work is formed by imaginative geography, because it is geographical imagination that is dominant in creating geography textbooks - especially in regional geography of distant countries. Two research questions have been defined, each with three sub-questions: 1) How far did the political situation at the time affect the scope of the curriculum on the individual powers? (1a / Is it true that the scope of the curriculum is always greater in textbooks for secondary schools compared to textbooks after primary schools?; 1b / Does the scope of the curriculum correlate with the contemporary world importance (economic, political) of a selected state in the given time?; 1c / Does the scope of the curriculum about a given state correlate with the foreign policy of our state in the given period? 2) How did the foreign policy of our state influence the discourse about the three world powers in individual historical periods? (2a / How are the majority titular nations presented, what is exposed and what, on the contrary, neglected, deformed or presented with less significance ?; 2b / How are minorities (ethnolinguistic, religious, racial, etc.) presented, what is exposed and what is neglected, deformed or presented with less significance ?; 2c / How is the standard of living of the population in individual countries presented in the studied periods resulting from the description of the state of the economy? The research has shown a diversity of approaches to teaching political and cultural geography (as part of regional geography) in different historical periods, the peculiarities with which it was accompanied at the time of upheavals on the world political scene, and using critical discourse analysis (CDA) it has also shown how knowledge from analytical categories was constructed in the studied discourse. Since the research object is formed by textbooks from the past 150 years, the method of discourse-historical analysis (DHA) is used, which is one of the variants of CDA, in which three concepts play an important role - criticism, power and ideology.
