Relationship Between Postnatal Body Growth and Indirect Markers of Prenatal Steroid Hormones on the Human Hand

Abstract:

Proporce lidské ruky bývají často dávány do spojitosti s ostatními rozměry lidského těla, např. s tělesnou výškou. Ruka se vyvíjí a do značné míry tvarově fixuje již v rané fázi prenatálního období. Dosažené délky prstů by tak mohly odrážet vlivy působení různých koncentrací prenatálních steroidních hormonů. Cílem práce bylo prozkoumat vztah vizuálně hodnoceného prstového vzorce s nástupem a průběhem pubertálního růstu a vývoje. Předpokládá se, že muži s typičtějším maskulinním vzorcem by měli mít časování a průběh pubertálního růstu specifičtější pro jejich pohlaví. U žen s maskulinním typem vzorce by naopak mohl být pozdější nástup puberty než u těch s femininním typem. Vzorek obsahoval 241 jedinců (122 žen a 119 mužů) longitudinálně sledovaných od narození do 18 let života v rámci Brněnské růstové studie. Do výzkumu byli zahrnuti i rodiče sledovaných jedinců. Statistická analýza vzorku byla provedena χ-kvadrát testem pro porovnání kategorií prstového vzorce mezi sebou a na hodnocení postnatálního růstu a výšek rodičů byla aplikována ANOVA. Výsledky prokázaly postupnou feminizaci prstového vzorce s rostoucím věkem do adolescence. Vizuální i statistické zhodnocení pak u většiny analýz pro sloučený soubor ukázalo významnější rozdíly mezi skupinami rozdělenými podle prstového vzorce. Při testování pro pohlaví zvlášť však nebyly nalezené rozdíly tak vysoce statisticky významné. Ve skupině rodičů měli muži s femininním typem vzorce v průměrů větší tělesnou výšku. Pro hodnocení růstu v pubertě se pak jevil významný vliv vzorce na časování růstu u dívek. Dívky s femininním typem vzorce měly dřívější nástup pubertálního růstu a vývoje než ty s maskulinním typem vzorce.

Abstract:

The dimensions of the human hand are often associated with body dimensions, particularly with body height. The hand development and its shape are fixed to the large extent in the early phase of the prenatal period. The achieved finger lengths could thus reflect the influence of different concentrations of prenatal steroid hormones. The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between the visually evaluated digital formula with the onset and course of pubertal growth and development. Men with more typical masculine type of the digital formula are supposed to have the timing and course of pubertal growth more specific to their gender. For women with masculine type the onset of puberty could be later than in those with a feminine type. The sample included 241 individuals (122 women and 119 men) longitudinally observed from birth to age of 18 years within the Brno Growth Study. The parents of the observed individuals were also included in the research. The statistical analysis of the sample was performed by the Chi-square test for comparing categories of the digital formula among each other and ANOVA was applied to evaluate postnatal growth and parental heights. The results demonstrated a gradual feminization of the digital formula with increasing age until adolescence. Visual and statistical evaluation for the combined set showed significant differences between the groups divided according to the digital formula in most analyses. However, when testing for gender separately the differences weren´t much highly statistically significant. In the group of the parents, males with feminine type of formula had a larger body height on average. For the evaluation of growth during puberty the influence of the formula on the timing of growth in girls appeared to be significant. The girls with the feminine type had earlier onset of pubertal growth and development compared to those with a masculine type of formula.
