The impact of the economic situation of swing states on the U.S. presidential election

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je ověření funkčnosti Fairova modelu pro predikci prezidentských voleb ve Spojených státech amerických na vybraných kyvadlových státech. Za tímto účelem byla použita data z U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, U.S. Census Bureau a OECD. Pomocí metody OLS byly odhadnuty modely pro státy Nové Mexiko, Iowa a Ohio a byla provedena ex post předpověď voleb 2020. Nejlepší výsledky nabízel model státu Ohio, nejhorší model pro Nové Mexiko. I přes dílčí nedostatky vyplývající ze samotné podstaty Fairova modelu dopadla predikce voleb 2020 uspokojivě ve dvou státech ze tří.

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to verify the functionality of Fair's model for predicting presidential elections in the United States of America in selected swing states. For this purpose, data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, U.S. Census Bureau and OECD were used. Using the OLS method, models for the states of New Mexico, Iowa and Ohio were estimated and an ex post prediction of the 2020 election was performed. The best results were offered by the model of the state of Ohio, the worst by the model for New Mexico. Despite partial shortcomings arising from the very nature of Fair's model, the prediction of the 2020 elections turned out satisfactorily in two out of three states.
