The Names of Domestic Animals in Russian, Ukrainian, Czech and English Languages

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá názvy domácích zvířat v ruštině, ukrajinštině, češtině a angličtině. Cílem práce je prozkoumat rozdíly a příbuznost mezi jazyky. Vybraná zoonyma jsme rozdělili a zkoumali podle následujících kritérií: základní charakteristika zvířete, popis procesu domestikace, etymologie, sémantika a frazeologické jednotky s animalistickým komponentem. Popis zvířete a procesu jeho zdomácnění ukazuje, jak se postupem doby mění role, využití a vztahy mezi člověkem a zvířetem. Etymologická část zahrnuje nejen údaje o původu slova, ale také popisuje změny významu a grafické podoby slova. Ve frazeologické části jsou brane v úvahu především frazémy, které se shodují ve většině zmíněných jazyků (z hlediska semantiky, původu a podoby).

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the names of domestic animals in Russian, Ukrainian, Czech and English. The purpose of this study is to explore the differences and similarities between the languages. We analyzed the selected zoonyms according to the following criteria: the main characteristics of the animal, process of domestication, etymology, semantic and phraseological units with animal components. The basic description of the animals and the process of their domestication shows how the role and relationship between people and animals have changed over time. The etymological part includes not only the information about word origin, but also describes the way a meaning and word form have changed. The semantic criterion reveals both direct and figurative meanings of the words. Research on phraseology points out that idioms are not the phenomena of one language. The same idiom with the identical meaning and origin can be used in different languages.
