Attitudes to Islam in the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren

Abstract:

Tato práce mapuje různé postoje k islámu, které se objevují mezi členy Českobratrské církve evangelické. Kromě tištěných materiálů a internetových zdrojů je významným zdrojem informací výzkum provedený dotazníkovou metodou mezi aktivními členy dvou vybraných sborů Českobratrské církve evangelické, rozhovory s faráři těchto sborů a účastníky mezináboženského dialogu. Práce zohledňuje spojitost postojů Českobratrské církve evangelické s obecným vývojem křesťansko-muslimských vztahů, zejména posun v náhledu na islám oproti době reformace. Zjišťuje také vliv církve na vytváření těchto postojů, vliv sekulárních médií na tyto postoje a rozdíly oproti zbytku společnosti. Bylo zjištěno, že oproti době reformace je muslim viděn primárně jako bližní, nikoli jako jinověrec. Zatímco v době reformace se argumentace točila především kolem teologických témat, současná ČCE se ve vztahu k islámu zaměřuje spíše na otázky lidsko-právní a sociální. Vzhledem k malému zájmu církve o problematiku islámu (zájem o tuto téma se výrazněji projevil až v roce 2014), výzkum potvrdil, že vliv církve na utváření postojů jejích členů k islámu je méně než padesátiprocentní. Média jsou tak významným zdrojem informací, většina respondentů k nim však přistupuje kriticky.

Abstract:

This thesis surveys the different attitudes to Islam, which appear among the members of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethern. In addition to printed materials and Internet resources, an important source of information is a survey among the active members of two chosen church boards of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethern, conducted by the method of questionnaire, the interviews with pastors of these church boards and the interviews with participants of interfaith dialogue. The thesis takes into consideration the continuity of the attitudes of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethern and general development in Christian- Muslim relations, particularly the shift in the view of Islam compared to the time of the Reformation. The thesis investigates also the influence of the church on the formation of these attitudes, of secular media on these attitudes and the difference of these stances compared to the rest of the society. It was discovered, that compared to the time of the Reformation, muslim is primarely seen as a fellowman and not a believer of other religion. Whereas in the time of the Reformation argumentation revolved mostly around theological topics, the contemporary ECCB in relation to Islam focuses rather on human rights and social issues. Considering the small interest of church in the issue of Islam (the interest in this issue manifested itself in the year 2014), the research confirmed, that the influence of the church on formation of attitudes of her members to Islam is less than fifty percent. Media as such are a significant source of information, but most respondents approach the information with critical eye.
