Determinants of trade between P.R.C. and R.O.C.(Taiwan)

Abstract:

V březnu 2014 proběhly na Tchaj-wanu protesty, které vedly k třítýdenní studentské okupaci parlamentu. Tyto protesty byly reakcí na uspěchaný ratifikační proces kontroverzní dohody liberalizující obchod se službami a investice mezi Čínskou lidovou republikou a Tchaj-wanem. Nedávné události dělají ze vztahu politiky a obchodu mezi těmito zeměmi vysoce aktuální téma. Cílem předložené práce je popis, identifikace a analýza determinant bilaterálního obchodu mezi těmito zeměmi s důrazem na politické faktory. První kapitola se zabývá vývojem politických vztahů a obchodní politiky obou zemí. V druhé části podrobněji rozebíráme toky zboží, přímých zahraničních investicí a osob vedoucí přes Tchajwanskou úžinu v letech 1982-2010. Poslední kapitola je věnována analýze bilaterálního obchodu pomocí modelu časové řady, ve kterém odhadujeme vlivy politických a ekonomických proměnných na růst celkového vzájemného obchodu. Výsledky našeho modelu naznačují, že stranická příslušnost tchajwanského prezidenta nemá významný dopad na objem obchodu. Dále náš model ukazuje, že diplomatické krize a obchodní dohody s třetími zeměmi mají nejspíše malý, ale měřitelný negativní dopad na čínsko-tchajwanský obchod.

Abstract:

In March 2014 there were protests in Taiwan, which led to a three-week-long student occupation of the parliament. Recent protests were a reaction to the hasty ratification process of the controversial agreement liberalizing trade and investment in services between the People’s Republic of China and Taiwan. These events demonstrate that the trade and political relations between these countries are a highly topical issue. The goal of the submitted thesis is to identify, describe and analyze the determinants of bilateral trade with a focus on political factors. The first chapter deals with the development of political relations and trade policies of both countries. In the second chapter we describe cross-strait flows of goods, foreign direct investment and persons in more detail between 1982 and 2010. The final chapter is dedicated to an analysis of bilateral trade using the time series model in which we estimate the impact of political and economic variables on mutual total trade growth. The results of our model suggest that party membership of the Taiwanese president does not have a significant influence on bilateral trade. Our model also implies that diplomatic crises and trade agreements with third countries probably have a low, but measurable negative impact on Chinese-Taiwanese trade
