About the Main Characters of the Three Major Novels by Graham Greene-The End of the Affair, The Power and the Glory and The Quiet American.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá hlavními postavami třech významných děl známého britského spisovatele Henryho Grahama Greena. Těmito díly jsou romány Konec dobrodružství, Moc a sláva a Tichý Američan. Konec dobrodružství se především zabývá sexuální a romantickou láskou mezi dvěma hlavními hrdiny, Sárou Milesovou a Mauricem Bendrixem. Dalším důležitým tématem je vztah člověka k Bohu. Bůh je zde zmiňován na každé stránce příběhu. Na druhé straně je ale zoufale nepřítomen, což často uvrhá hlavní hrdiny do těžké deprese. Graham Greene ve svém románu také zkoumá, za jakých okolností se člověk může stát svatým. Dochází k závěru, že světcem se může stát i člověk s ne úplně čistým svědomím, projde-li si při tom očistcem. Moc a sláva se soustřeďuje na dvě rozdílné ideologie jimiž je katolicismus a komunismus. Poručík reprezentuje ideu komunismu, zatímco kněz ideu katolicismu. Graham Greene zde opět zkoumá za jakých okolností se člověk může stát světcem a dochazí ke zcela totožnému názoru jako v knize Konec dobrodružství. Člověk se skrze utrpení může stát mučedníkem. Fanatismus poručíka je brán jako škodlivý a nebezpečný. Hlavním motivem románu Tichý Američan je politika. Graham Greene opět zjišťuje, jak fanatismus dokáže způsobit velké neštěstí. Dalším důležitým tématem je morálka a to, zda je morální zbavit se člověka, pokud škodí svému okolí a zda je taková vražda z morálního hlediska přijatelná.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis is concerned with the main characters of three major novels by Graham Greene The End of the Affair, The Quiet American and The Power and the Glory. The End of the Affair is mostly preoccupied by sexual and romantic love between the two main characters Sarah Miles and Maurice Bendrix. Another topic is the love of God which is present on each page of the novel. The question of sainthood is also put in front of the reader of the novel. It is suggested that one can become a saint through suffering and pain no matter how he previously lived and whether he sinned. The Power and the Glory on the other hand mainly focuses on two rivalling ideologies, Catholicism and Communism, which are represented by the two main characters, the lieutenant and the priest. The lieutenant represents Communism while the priest represents Catholicism. The question of sainthood is again dealt with and again Greene reaches the same conclusion, that through pain and suffering one can achieve sainthood. Fanaticism of the lieutenant is seen here as a very dangerous thing, which can cause pain and suffering of many people. The Quiet American on the other hand closely deals with politics. The question of fanaticism is again put under close scrutiny and is seen as something very dangerous and harmful. There is also the question of morality and whether it is morally acceptable to eliminate a harmful person although in normal society it is considered to be a murder.
