Competition on the personal rail carrier market in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Předmětem této bakalářské práce je analýza konkurenčního stavu na české železnici se zaměřením na komparaci a přínos dvou nejvýznamnějších soukromých společností RegioJet a Leo Express. Cílem práce je konkretizovat postup liberalizace na železnici, pomocí analýzy dostupných dat vyhodnotit přínos konkurence pro zákazníky. Teoretický důvod vysvětluje podstatné aspekty železniční dopravy, vymezuje konkurenci, bariéry odvětví a regulaci. Dále se práce zaměřuje na vývoj a analýzu liberalizace železnic v ČR v kontextu vývoje evropské legislativy. V poslední části je pomocí komparace analyzován dopad liberalizace na českou železnici, zejména na plně konkurenční trať Praha–Ostrava. Jsou analyzovány výkonnostní ukazatele a zákaznický pohled opřen o vyhodnocení dotazníkového šetření.

Abstract:

The topic of this bachelor’s thesis is a description and analysis of competitive conditions on the Czech railway focusing on the comparison of two leading private traffic companies RegioJet and Leo Express. The aim of the thesis is to define and specify the process of liberalization on the railway by dint of analysis of available data and evaluating the benefits brought by the competitors for customers. The theoretical introduction explains fundamental aspects of rail transport, defines forms of competition, barriers of access to the market and regulation. Secondly, the thesis is focused on development and analysis of railway liberalization in the Czech Republic in the context of evolution of the European Union framework. In the final chapter, the impact of liberalization on the Czech railway is evaluated by means of comparison, especially on the fully competitive track between Prague and Ostrava. Finally, the performance pointers are examined and the customer’s view about benefits of competition is supported by evaluation of the questionnaire results.
