Comparison of the development of the balance of payments of the Czech Republic, the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Austria in the years 2004 to 2024

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá vývojem platební bilance České republiky v letech 2004 až 2024 a jejím porovnáním s vývojem platební bilance Spolkové republiky Německo a Rakouské republiky. Cílem je zhodnotit dynamiku hlavních složek platební bilance běžného, kapitálového a finančního účtu a analyzovat vliv klíčových ekonomických událostí, jako globální finanční krize v roce 2008, pandemie COVID-19 a Ruská agrese na Ukrajině. Teoretická část práce vymezuje základní pojmy, strukturu a význam platební bilance včetně vyrovnávacích mechanismů, typů měnových kurzů a související makroekonomické teorie zahraničního obchodu. Praktická část se opírá o kvantitativní a komparativní analýzu oficiálních dat centrálních bank, statistických úřadů a mezinárodních institucí. Výsledky ukazují, že zatímco Česká republika vykazovala ve sledovaném období vyšší volatilitu sald, zejména v důsledku vnějších šoků, Německo a Rakousko si udržely stabilní přebytky zejména díky své silné exportní výkonnosti a příjmům z kapitálu. Česká ekonomika se odlišuje strukturou běžného účtu, kde přebytky služeb a zboží částečně kompenzují hluboký deficit prvotních důchodů.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the development of the balance of payments of the Czech Republic between 2004 and 2024 and its comparison with the balance of payments of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Austria. The aim is to assess the dynamics of the main components of the balance of payments of the current, capital and financial accounts and to analyse the impact of key economic events such as the global financial crisis in 2008, the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian aggression in Ukraine. The theoretical part of the thesis defines the basic concepts, structure and meaning of the balance of payments, including the balancing mechanisms, types of exchange rates and the related macroeconomic theory of foreign trade. The practical part relies on quantitative and comparative analysis of official data from central banks, statistical offices and international institutions. The results show that while the Czech Republic exhibited higher volatility of balances during the period under review, mainly due to external shocks, Germany and Austria maintained stable surpluses, mainly due to their strong export performance and capital income. The Czech economy is distinguished by its current account structure, where surpluses in services and goods partly compensate for a deep primary income deficit.
