According to current hypotheses, cancer stem cells or tumor-initiating cells play a crucial role in process of tumor initiation, tumor growth and in process of metastasis. Podľa súčasných hypotéz o vývoji nádorového ochorenia majú nádorové kmeňové bunky, resp. tumor-iniciujúce bunky zásadnú úlohu v procese iniciácie nádoru, pri progresii nádorového ochorenia a v procese metastázovania.
