The Myth of Information Overload: Evidence of the Reality of the Phenomenon in Library and Information Science Research

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou reálnosti fenoménu informačního přetížení. V teoretické části práce je zkoumání reálnosti fenoménu informačního přetížení ukotveno jako zkoumání jeho celospolečenské evidence. Je nastíněno historické pozadí fenoménu a představení rozporu fylogenetické a kulturní evoluce v kontextu informačního přetížení. Součástí textu jsou také příčiny a symptomy zkoumaného fenoménu. Na závěr teoretické části jsou představeny některá existující řešení problému a kritické ohlasy na reálnost fenoménu informačního přetížení. Teoretická část končí uvedením fenoménu jako moderního mýtu informační společnosti. V druhé části práce je na základě kritické literární rešerše proveden sekundární výzkum vědeckého výstupu o fenoménu informačního přetížení z oblasti knihovnictví a informační vědy. Závěry výzkumu potvrzují mytičnost fenoménu v důsledku nedostatku holistických empirických výzkumů, vágní operacionalizace fenoménu, rozcházejících se vědeckých závěrů o reálnosti fenoménu nebo v důsledku adaptace na přetížení samotné.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the issue of the reality of the information overload phenomenon. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the investigation of the reality of the information overload phenomenon is anchored as an examination of its all-society occurrence. The historical background of the phenomenon and the presentation of the contradiction of phylogenetic and cultural evolution in the context of information overload are outlined. The causes and symptoms of the phenomenon under investigation are also included. At the end of the theoretical part, some existing solutions to the problem and critical feedback on the reality of the information overload phenomenon are presented. The theoretical part is concluded with the introduction of the phenomenon as a modern myth of the information society. In the second part of the thesis, a secondary research on scientific output about the phenomenon of information overload in the area of library and information science is carried out on the basis of a critical literature review. The findings of the research confirm the mythical nature of the phenomenon due to the lack of holistic empirical research, vague operationalization of the phenomenon, diverging scientific conclusions about the reality of the phenomenon or as a result of adaptation to overload itself.
