Social impacts of the introduction of robotic process automation on employees

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou robotické procesní automatizace (RPA) a jejími vlivy na zaměstnance. Cílem této diplomové práce je identifikovat sociální dopady zavedení robotické procesní automatizace na zaměstnance ve vybrané organizaci dle pracovních rolí. Tato práce se věnuje zkoumání toho, jak technologie RPA ovlivňuje spokojenost s prací, potřebu se učit novým dovednostem a sociální komunikaci z perspektivy pracovních rolí jednotlivých zaměstnanců. Ve výzkumné části této práce byla provedena vícenásobná případová studie zaměstnanců reprezentujících šest různých pracovních rolí, v jejichž práci se RPA uplatňuje. Analyzovaná data byla získána pomocí metod pozorování pracovního prostředí zaměstnanců, analýzy dokumentů a provedením polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s vybranými zaměstnanci. Mezi hlavní výsledky práce patří zjištění, že RPA přispívá ke snížení pocitu rutiny a zvýšení smysluplnosti práce u zaměstnanců pouze částečně. V některých případech zavedená automatizace působí dokonce na spokojenost zaměstnance negativně, následně může vést až k nepřímým škodlivým dopadům. Zavedení automatizace nemotivuje zaměstnance, kteří se cítí být nenahraditelní, aby se intenzivněji sebevzdělávali. Zvážení důsledků automatizace práce umožní organizacím a jejich zaměstnancům lépe se připravit na změny, které jsou příležitostmi pro rozvoj lidského potenciálu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the topic of robotic process automation and its effects on employees. The main goal of this diploma thesis is to identify the social impacts of the implementation of robotic process automation on employees in selected organization according to their job roles. This work examines how RPA technology affects job satisfaction, the need to learn new skills and social communication from the perspective of employee job roles. A multiple case study of six job roles in which RPA is applied to the employee’s process was performed. The examined data were gathering using the method of workplace observation, document analysis and conducting semi-structured interviews with different job roles. The main results of this work are that RPA contributes to reduce the sense of routine and improve the meaningfulness of work to the employee only partially, but in some cases the introduction of automation affects employee’s job satisfaction negatively and leads to an indirect harmful impact. The introduction of automation does not motivate employees to intensive their self-education due to the feeling of being irreplaceable. Considering the future impacts of implementing automation will enable organizations and their employees be better prepared for the changes, that create opportunities for realizing human potential.
