Social deviation and suicide: The influence of gender on suicide behaviour from the social bond theory point of view

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou suicidálního jednání, a to z hlediska vlivu, který má na jeho podobu gender. Suicidální jednání zkoumá prostřednictvím teorie sociálních vazeb podle Travise Hirschiho, který dává sociální deviaci a deviantní jednání do souvislosti s oslabením nebo narušením sociálních vazeb. Jedná se o připoutání k ostatním lidem, racionální závazek ke společnosti, účast na konvenčních aktivitách a víru ve společenské hodnoty. V souvislosti s nimi se potom soustředí na vliv nedostatečného svázání jedince se sociálním prostředím na tendenci k suicidálnímu jednání, a to s ohledem na gender jedince. Role a rolová očekávání, která jsou ve společnosti spojena s mužstvím a ženstvím, jsou v mnoha ohledech rozdílné, proto je otázkou, zda je rozdílná také podoba a význam, který muži a ženy přikládají jednotlivým sociálním vazbám. Analytickou částí diplomové práce je kvalitativní výzkum založený na hloubkových polostrukturovaných rozhovorech s osobami, u nichž se projevilo suicidální jednání. Snahou této diplomové práce je jejich prostřednictvím lépe porozumět síle společenské podmíněnosti suicidálního jednání u obou pohlaví.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the problem of suicidal behaviour from the perspective of the influence of gender. The research of this behaviour is based on the findings about social bonds as defined by Travis Hirschi. According to Hirschi, deviation and deviant behaviour are pertinent to the weakening or the disturbance of the social bonds such as attachment to other people, rational commitment to society, taking part in conventional activities and believes in social values. In context with that, it concentrates on the influence of the insufficient bond of the individual with the society on the suicidal behaviour with respect to the gender of the individual. The roles and expectations, which are connected in the society with masculinity and femininity, differ in many ways and so the question is if men and women ascribe different forms and meanings to the social bonds. The analytical part of the thesis consists of qualitative research based on in-depth half-structured interviews with individuals who showed suicidal behaviour. The aim of this work is, based on these interviews, to better understand the power of the social conditionality of suicidal behaviour in both genders.
