Socratic Method and Its Use in English Language Teaching

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá Sokratovským rozhovorem, což je metoda, která se převážně používá pro nácvik kritického myšlení a schopnosti zhodnotit nakolik je vlastní tvrzení platné. Tato metoda je založena na dialogu, kde se učitel ptá studenta specifickým druhem otázky, s cílem rozebrat a poukázat na protichůdná stanoviska v jeho tvrzení, a tím se přibližovat pravdě. Cílem této práce je popsat původ Sokratovské metody, její využití v metodologii, včetně metodologie výuky anglického jazyka, s poukazem na praktické příklady. Praktická část obsahuje analýzu dat sebraných během seminářů s učiteli a budoucími učiteli, která jsou vyhodnocena a porovnávána z metodologického úhlu pohledu. Semináře jsou zaměřeny na využití Sokratovské metody ve výuce, její výhody a nevýhody a na to, jaká je role učitele.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the Socratic Method, a technique mainly used to improve critical thinking, and question the validity of one's knowledge regarding a given issue. The method is based on a conversation where a teacher asks the student specific types of questions in order to deconstruct and eliminate contradicting opinions and thus support the search for truth. The objective of this work is to describe the history of this method, its uses in methodology, including ELT methodology, and exemplify these. In the practical part, an analysis of data collected during seminars with teachers and teacher trainees is presented and the seminars are analysed and compared from the methodological point of view. The focus of the seminars is on the Socratic Method in teaching, its advantages and disadvantages, and roles of a teacher.
