The ‘Ins and Outs’ of Popular Music Lyrics: Misogyny in and behind the Lyrics

Abstract:

Cílem tohoto studia bylo odpovědět na výzkumnou otázku: “Jaké jsou hlavní implicitní významy, skryté za současnou populární hudbou?” Vycházím z paradigmatu silného programu v kulturní sociologie a z teorií semiotické produktivity fanoušků a explicitní a implicitní socializace. Analyzovala jsem 10 textů nejpopulárnějších písníček z žebříčku Billboard Greatest songs of all time: Hot 100 Songs. Tento žebříček obsahoval různé žánry a období, čím poskytnul různorodé publikum pro analýzu. Využívala jsem metodu interpretačního čtění Ricoeura (1976) a zkoumla jsem explicitní a implicitní významy textů písní. Získala jsem překvapivé výsledky: nejčastěji se vyskytovaly takové aspekty misogynie jako pohrdavé pojmenování a stud, sexuální objectifikacee, prohlášení za legitimní násilí proti ženám a oslava prostituce. [Weitzer and Kubrin 2009] Pomocí abdukci na základě překvapivých výsledků jsem došla k závěru: lze předpokládat, že explicitní a implicitní nenávist k ženám může fungovat jako strukturální genderové násilí. Podle předpokladu silného programu-kulturní autonomie, kultura může ovlivňovat chování lidé, tedy lze se domnívat, že implicitní misogynie mohla mít nějaký vliv na různorodé auditorium tohoto žebříčku a mohla způsobit psychologický a emocionální útlak žen. Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to answer the research question: "What are some of the primary implicit meanings underlying contemporary popular music?" Based on the strong program in cultural sociology and theories of semiotic productivity of fans and explicit and implicit socialization, I analyzed the lyrics of top 10 songs from Billboard’s chart Greatest songs of all time: Hot 100 Songs. This chart included various genres and time periods from 1959 till 2011, providing my research study with a diverse audience. According to an interpretive reading, as proposed by Ricoeur (1976), I examined the explicit and implicit meanings of the lyrics. I obtained surprising results: in most cases, I uncovered such implicit aspects of misogyny as derogatory naming and shaming, sexual objectification, legitimation of violence against women, celebration of prostitution. [Weitzer and Kubrin 2009] Through abduction, I drew the following conclusion from the surprising results of the analysis: it can be supposed that explicit and implicit hatred toward women can function as structural gender violence. According to the premises of the strong program-cultural autonomy, culture may affect people’s behaviour, so it can be supposed that implicit misogyny might have a certain influence on the diverse audience of analyzed popular songs, leading to the oppression of women psychologically and emotionally.
