Comparative analysis of translation of phraseological units from Spanish to Czech by human and machine translator

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse a human translation of phraseological units from Spanish to Czech and their comparison with a translation generated by automatic translator. The thesis is diverted into theoretical, methodological and practical (analytical) part. In the theoretical part, we explain phraseological terminology in the context of linguistics, define its focus of interest, describe Spanish phraseological units and their characteristics. Then we focus on Theory of translation, especially on translator’s competency, translation of phraseological units, problematic aspects of this translation and specific strategies used. After that, we describe automatic machine translation and its development. We provide an explanation of specific systems and their strategies. After that we focused on automatic translators available online for free, especially Google Translate used by us in this thesis. In the conclusion of theoretical part, we address issues that are accompanying automatic translation and ways to assess its quality. Methodological part consists of the process of the creation of corpus, e.g. collection of data to analyse. In the practical part, we compare the similarity between translations of phraseological units from Spanish to Czech obtained from the corpus with phraseological units generated by automatic translator. The aim of this thesis was to find out to how much are contemporary automatic translators able to fulfil the expectations of human translator when translating phraseology.

Abstract:

Tématem této diplomové práce je analýza lidského překladu frazeologických jednotek ze španělštiny do češtiny a jejich srovnání s překladem vygenerovaných automatickým překladačem. Práce je rozdělena na část teoretickou, metodologickou a praktickou (analytickou). V teoretické vysvětlujeme pojmosloví z oblasti frazeologie, teorie překladu a automatického překladu. Nejprve vymezujeme frazeologii v rámci lingvistiky, určujeme oblasti jejího zájmu, popisujeme španělské frazeologické jednotky a jejich vlastnosti. Poté se zaměřujeme na teorii překladu, a to především na překladatelskou kompetenci, překlad frazeologických jednotek, jeho problematické aspekty a na jednotlivé překladatelské strategie. Následně se zaměřujeme na automatický strojový překlad a jeho vývoj. Popisujeme jednotlivé systémy a jejich strategie, věnujeme se automatickým překladačům dostupným zdarma online, přičemž hlavní důraz klademe na později využitý Google Translate. V závěru teoretické části popisujeme problémy, se kterými se automatický překlad potýká a také způsoby hodnocení jeho kvality. Metodologická část se věnuje průběhu tvorby korpusu, tedy, sběru dat k analýze. Praktická část srovnává podobnost překladů frazeologických jednotek uvedených v korpusu a frazeologismů vygenerovaných automatickým překladačem ve směru ze španělštiny do češtiny. Cílem práce je zjistit, do jaké míry jsou v dnešní době automatické překladače schopny při překladu frazeologie dostát očekáváním překladatele.
