Stress, coping strategies and mental condition of medical staff

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je zaměřena na problematiku stresu, strategií zvládání a psychickou kondici u zdravotnického personálu. Práce se dělá na část teoretickou a část praktickou. Cílem teoretické části diplomové práce je seznámit čtenáře s pojmem stres, zvládáním stresu a profesí zdravotní sestry. Praktická část práce si klade za úkol prozkoumat percipovanou úroveň stresu zdravotnickými pracovníky, dále identifikovat nejčastěji využívané strategie zvládání stresových situací a celkový psychický stav zdravotníků v současné nelehké době kladoucí vyšší nároky právě na tuto profesi. Za účelem prozkoumání hodnot vybraných proměnných jsme použili tři psychodiagnostické nástroje: Škála aktuální úrovně percipovaného stresu (PSS), Strategie zvládání stresu (SVF 78) a dotazník SUPSO. Náš výběrový soubor tvořilo 141 zdravotnických pracovníků sloužící v tzv. první linii ve věku od 18 do 64 let. Mezi nejpodstatnější zjištění patřilo odhalení střední úrovně pociťovaného stresu, odhalení převahy volby pozitivních strategií zvládání a v rámci psychického stavu převládaly u zdravotníků úzkostné a depresivní pocity. Prokázali jsme negativní souvislost mezi mírou percipovaného stresu a psychickou pohodou i aktivností, dále pozitivní souvislost mezi psychickým nepokojem, odreagováváním se, depresí, úzkostností a sklíčeností. Výsledky také poukázaly, že zdravotníci s vyšším věkem a s delší praxí v oboru volí častěji pozitivní strategie zvládání zátěže.

Abstract:

This master thesis is focused on the issue of stress, coping strategies and mental condition of medical staff. The thesis is divided into a theoretical part and practical part. The aim of the theoretical part of the master thesis is to acquaint the reader with the concept of stress, coping with stress and the profession of nurse. The practical part aims to explore the perceived level of stress among healthcare professionals, identify the most commonly used strategies for coping with stressful situations and the overall mental state of healthcare professionals in the current difficult times placing higher demands for this very profession. In order to examine the values of selected variables we have used three psycho-diagnostic tools: The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Stress management strategies (SVF 78) and a questionnaire SUPSO. Our sample consisted of 141 healthcare professionals serving in the so-called front line aged 18-64 years. Among the most important findings were the detection of moderate level of stress, revealing the predominance of the choice of positive strategies and prevalence of anxiety and depression within the mental state of healthcare professionals. We have shown a negative correlation between the level of perceived stress and mental well-being and vigorousness, furthermore, positive connection between mental restlessness, relaxation, depression, anxiety and discouragement. The results also showed that health professionals with older age and with longer experience in the field more often choose positive coping strategies.
