Foreign policy of the USA towards DPRK in terms of human rights

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá zahraniční politikou v oblasti lidských práv, vyvíjenou Spojenými státy proti režimu v KLDR. Severní Korea je totalitní zemí, kde dochází k systematickému porušování lidských práv. USA mají naopak dlouhodobou tradici demokratického zřízení a v minulosti se zasloužily o šíření hodnot s ním spjatých. KLDR však také porušuje světový mír a bezpečnost testováním zbraní hromadného ničení, které vyvíjí za účelem odstrašení svých nepřátel. USA tak čelí výzvě v otázce priorit své zahraniční politiky. Práce analyzuje užívání amerických lidskoprávních nástrojů ve vztahu ke KLDR. Hodnotí, zda napomáhají k dosažení cílů, tedy vytváření tlaku na režim, a následnému přehodnocení jeho politiky nebo alespoň zvyšování povědomí o porušování lidských práv v KLDR.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with foreign policy in the field of human rights being developed by the USA against regime in DPRK. North Korea is a totalitarian country where systematic violation of human rights has been taking place. Contrary to this, the USA has had a long tradition of a democratic regime and in the past they have spread values of this nature. However, DPRK also violates the world’s peace and security by testing weapons of mass destruction, which are being developed to threaten the country‘s enemies. So the USA faces a challenge in terms of their priorities in foreign policy. The thesis analyses the usage of American human rights tools towards DPRK. It examines if the tools are efficient enough to reach goals – put a pressure on the regime leading to a subsequent reassessment of its policy or at least to make the regime realize its violation of human rights in DPRK.
