Sex Differences in the Shape of Carpal Bones

Abstract:

Previous research reported that majority of carpal measurements are larger in males than females. It was also revealed that each carpal bone revealed certain sex-related shape dimorphism. Significant shape differences were found on the lunate and triquetral bone. Ontogenesis, as well as functional and evolutionary aspects of the human carpus may represent the potential factors which cause sex-related shape differences of these bones. The objectives of this thesis were to analyze sexual and side differences in the shape and volume size of the lunate and triquetral bone pairs originated in the same carpus. In total, 3D models of the lunate and triquetral bone from 21 individuals (12 males and 9 females) were generated using close range photogrammetry. Shape differences between males and females, and body sides were compared by means of mesh-to-mesh comparison computed in FIDENTIS Analyst software. The volume size of the bones was tested for sexual dimorphism by means of parametric two-sample t-test and nonparametric two-sample Wilcoxon test. The test results did not confirm any statistically significant differences in the bone shape between the sexes and body sides. The visualizations of the male and female, right and left average shape meshes, however, displayed certain group-specific morphology. The lunate average shape mesh reflected distinct sexual dimorphism in the anatomical position of the palmar horn, side differences were present in the shape of the triquetral facet. The triquetral average shape mesh showed noticeable sex-related differences in the anatomical position of the pisiform facet, side differences were visible in the anatomical position of the distal facet of the bone.

Abstract:

Predchádzajúci výskum odhalil, že muži majú vo väčšine prípadov väčšie rozmery zápästných kostí ako ženy. Súčasne sa ukázalo, že každá zápästná kosť vykazuje určitý tvarový pohlavný dimorfizmus. Významné rozdiely v tvare sa našli na os lunatum a os triquetrum. Ontogenéza, ako aj funkčné a evolučné aspekty zápästia môžu predstavovať potencionálne faktory, ktoré spôsobujú pohlavné rozdiely v tvare týchto kostí. Cieľom tejto bakalárskej práce bolo analyzovať pohlavné a stranové rozdiely v tvare a objeme dvojíc os lunatum a os triquetrum, pochádzajúcich z rovnakého zápästia. Celkovo boli fotogrametrickou metódou vytvorené 3D modely os lunatum a os triquetrum 21 jedincov (12 mužov a 9 žien). Tvarové rozdiely medzi mužmi a ženami, a telovými stranami boli na modeloch analyzované metódou porovnávania polygonálnych sietí v programe FIDENTIS Analyst. Pohlavný dimorfizmus vo veľkosti objemov kostí bol testovaný parametrickým dvojvýberovým t-testom a neparametrickými Wilcoxonovým testom. Výsledky testov nepotvrdili štatisticky významné rozdiely v tvare oboch kostí medzi pohlaviami a stranami tela. Vizualizácie ženských a mužských, pravých a ľavých priemerných modelov os lunatum a os triquetrum, však naznačili niektoré morfologické odlišnosti. Na os lunatum bol pohlavný dimorfizmus zreteľný v anatomickej polohe palmárného rohu kosti, stranové rozdiely boli viditeľné v tvare kĺbovej plochy pre spojenie s os triquetrum. Os triquetrum vykazovala výrazné pohlavné rozdiely v anatomickej polohe kĺbovej plôšky pre os pisiforme, stranové rozdiely boli nájdené v anatomickej polohe distálnej plochy kosti.
