Learner Translation Corpora in Translation Teaching: CELTraC Analysis and Applications

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá analýzou a možnostmi využití CELTraCu, žákovského překladového korpusu, který byl představen jako pilotní projekt v roce 2014 na Katedře anglistiky a amerikanistiky Masarykovy univerzity. Cílem práce je proniknout do překladatelských strategií a postupů používaných studenty při překladu odborných textů z češtiny do angličtiny a nastínit, jak lze žákovské překladové korpusy využít za účelem zkvalitnění výuky překladu. Jelikož jsou texty analyzované v rámci této práce odbornými překlady do cizího jazyka, zaměřuje se první část práce na tyto dva typy překladu, tzn. odborný překlad a překlad do cizího jazyka. Na základě jejich charakteristik jsou následně definovány kompetence potřebné pro odborný překlad do cizího jazyka a představeny možnosti, jak tyto kompetence pomocí korpusů efektivně rozvíjet, přičemž největší pozornost je věnována právě žákovským překladovým korpusům. Druhá část práce dále seznamuje čtenáře se samotným CELTraCem a prezentuje úpravy, které v korpusu proběhly od jeho původní kompilace. Korpusová data jsou potom použita pro analýzu studentských překladů a otestování několika hypotéz.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the analysis and possible applications of CELTraC, Czech-English Learner Translation Corpus, introduced as a pilot project at the Department of English and American Studies, Masaryk University, in 2014. The purpose of the thesis is to gain an in-depth insight into the translation strategies and techniques employed by undergraduate students when translating specialized texts from Czech into English, and to explore the ways in which learner translation corpora can be used to enhance the quality of translation teaching. Since the texts analysed within the work are specialized translations into the second language, the first part of the thesis focuses on the aforementioned types of translation, i.e. specialized and L2 translation. An attempt is made to define the competences necessary for L2 specialized translation and the ways of fostering these competences using a corpus approach are introduced, special attention being paid to the above-mentioned learner translation corpora. The second part of the thesis is then devoted to CELTraC, presenting the changes and modifications made since its initial compilation in 2014. The corpus data are subsequently used to analyse learner translations and to test several hypotheses.
