English in the streets of Pilsen

Abstract:

The subject of this undergraduate thesis is to analyze selected written texts that could be found around the city of Pilsen and which had direct translations. To accomplish this field research was conducted to collect the texts for analysis. The analysis focused on evaluating translations using translation theory, mainly with the use of House's model for translation evaluation. Taken into account were also stylistics and semantic evaluation to form a complex picture of the choices taken by the authors of the texts, which were found to be mostly appropriate and the differences in content between source texts and translated texts were almost negligible.

Abstract:

Tématem této bakalářské práce je analýza psaných textů, které byly nalezeny v Plzni a jejichž součástí byly anglické varianty. Ke splnění tohoto cíle byl proveden terénní průzkum za účelem získání daných textů k analýze. Analýza se zabývá vyhodnocením kvality překladů za použití různých teoretických konceptů z oblasti překladatelství, a to zejména Housové modelu pro zhodnocení překladů. V potaz byly také brány stylistické a významové aspekty daných překladů za účelem vytvoření komplexního obrazu toho, jak se autor rozhodoval a jaký byl následný efekt. Ten byl shledán většinou vhodným pro dané situace a zároveň nebyl nalezen výrazný významový rozdíl mezi překlady.
