The modal verb may – its usage and meanings in contemporary British and American English based on corpus analysis

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá modálním slovesem may a významy, které toto sloveso vyjadřuje v současné britské a americké angličtině. Cílem této práce je zjistit procentuální zastoupení jednotlivých významů slovesa may v současné britské i americké angličtině a přispět k diskuzi o tom, jak toto sloveso vnímat s ohledem na jeho sémantiku. Teoretická část stručně představuje modalitu jako takovou a podrobně popisuje jednotlivé modální významy, kterých sloveso may nabývá. Praktická část je věnována korpusové analýze; analýze 100 vzorků z Britského národního korpusu (BYU-BNC) a 100 vzorků z Korpusu současné americké angličtiny (COCA). Výsledky této analýzy poukazují na nerovnoměrnou distribuci modálních významů slovesa may v obou jazykových varietách; především absentujícího významu „povolení“ v americkém vzorku, ve kterém se rovněž mnohem častěji vyskytuje „kvazi-konjunktiv“. Dále se v analýze projevila kontextová nejednoznačnost rozlišování významu „možnosti“ na faktickou a epistemickou. Výsledky této práce je možné využít k tomu, aby teorie v gramatikách i materiál v učebnicích lépe odpovídaly jazykové realitě.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with modal verb may and the meanings which this verb expresses in contemporary British and American English. This thesis aims to ascertain the occurrence of each individual modal meaning of may in both contemporary British and American English, and to contribute to the debate of how this modal verb should be perceived in contemporary English when it comes to its semantics. The theoretical part briefly introduces modality itself and presents individual modal meanings of may in greater detail. The applied part is dedicated to corpus analysis; i.e. analysis of 100 samples from the British National Corpus (BYU-BNC), and of 100 samples from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). Findings of this analysis show uneven distribution of modal meanings in both language varieties; namely the absence of ‘permission’ meaning in the COCA sample, where the occurrence of the ‘quasi-subjunctive’ was much higher. Contextual ambiguity between the ‘factual’ and ‘theoretical possibility’ distinction was manifested in the analysis. The results of this thesis may be used for a better correspondence between the theory, textbook materials and the language reality.
