Self-esteem of Pupils with Specific Learning Disabilities and their Positions in the Class

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na problematiku specifických vývojových poruch učení (specifické poruchy učení, SPU). Naším cílem bylo zjistit, zda žáci, kterým byla některá z forem poruch učení diagnostikována a kteří byli integrováni do běžného typu základních škol, mají ve srovnání se svými vrstevníky nižší sebehodnocení. Dále nás zajímalo, jaké sociální pozice budou tito jedinci ve školních třídách mezi ostatními zaujímat. Výzkumná studie je kvalitativního charakteru a vychází z komparace výzkumného a kontrolního souboru. Celkem se jí zúčastnilo 50 žáků základních škol ve věku od 8 do 11 let. Ke zjištění sebehodnocení žáků byla využita upravená verze dotazníku Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory (C.S.E.I.) a dále námi vytvořená Škála hodnocení žáka. Pozici jedinců ve třídě jsme zkoumali prostřednictvím Plebiscitu náklonnosti, jedné ze sociometrických metod. Výsledky, k nimž jsme dospěli, potvrzují snížené sebehodnocení žáků s poruchami učení, ale zároveň poukazují na to, že vzhledem k sociálním pozicím, jichž dosahují, nepatří ve školní třídě výlučně mezi odmítané jedince.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on the topic of the specific developmental learning disorders (specific learning disabilities). The aim of this paper is to find out whether the pupils, who have been diagnosed to have some type of the specific learning disabilities and who have been put into a common elementary school, have lower self-esteem in comparison to other children of their age. Further, we were interested to know what social positions the handicapped children have among their schoolmates in the class. The exploratory study has a qualitative character and is based on comparison of the experimental and the control group. Fifty elementary school pupils in the age of 8 to 11 were inquired. As a questionnaire, a modified version of the Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory (C.S.E.I.) was used as well as our Pupil’s Esteem Scale. The social position of a child in the class was examined by means of the Plebiscite of Affection, one of the sociometric methods. The results of the study have corroborated the assumption that the pupils with specific learning disorders have lower self-esteem, but at the same time, they have shown that, considering the social positions these children have in the class, they do not exclusively count among the resented individuals.
