The impacts of selected energy factors on the Czech economy

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vybranými tématy energetické ekonomie v České republice, s využitím ekonometrických metod. Práce začíná přehledem českého energetického prostředí, jakožto nezbytným předpokladem pro další zkoumání. Kvůli zvláštní pozici průmyslového sektoru v ČR je zvláštní pozornost věnována změnám spotřeby energií v průmyslovém sektoru. S využitím dekompoziční metody jsou změny spotřeby kvantifikovány jakožto příspěvky celkové ekonomické aktivity průmyslového sektoru, změn ve struktuře průmyslového sektoru a zlepšení energetické efektivnosti. Zlepšení energetické efektivnosti byly hlavním faktorem při snížení spotřeby energií v průmyslu. Většina těchto změn však proběhla před rokem 2000. Jako sub-sektory s největším potenciálem pro energetickou politiku byly určeny Výroba základních kovů, Chemický a petrochemický průmysl, Nekovové minerální výrobky a Vláknina, papír a výrobky z papíru. Hlavní pozornost je však v práci věnována vztahu mezi spotřebou energií a ekonomickým růstem, tzv. energy-economy nexus. Výsledky odhadů naznačují, že tzv. hypotéza úspor, tj. kauzalita směřující od HDP ke spotřebě energií, jsou nejvhodnější hypotézou pro data ČR v období 1996-2011. Navržená metodologie je založena na testování kauzality u proměnných, které jsou I(1) a určení znaménka kauzality na základě akumulovaných zobecněných impulsních odezev. Výsledky ukazují, že zahrnutí měřítka cen energií a určení znaménka kauzality jsou vhodnou metodou při identifikaci kauzálního vztahu v tzv. energy-economy nexu. Dominantní pozice průmyslového sektoru v české ekonomice je potvrzena rovněž výsledky odhadů kauzálních vztahů. Zaměření pozornosti energetické politiky cílené na úspory energií by mělo být především na snížení spotřeby pevných paliv, a dále redukci spotřeby energií a elektřiny v průmyslovém sektoru.

Abstract:

This thesis analyzes the selected areas of energy economics in the Czech Republic with the aid of econometric methods. The thesis starts with the overview of the Czech energy environment, as a necessary prerequisite for further examination. Due to the special position of the industrial sector in the Czech Republic, the special attention is paid to the changes in the industrial energy consumption. With the aid of the LMD1 decomposition method, these changes are quantified as the contributions of the changes in the overall industrial economic activity, the changes in the structure of the industry and the energy efficiency improvements. It has been found the energy efficiency improvements were the major driver of the energy consumption reduction in the industry. However, most of the changes took place before the year 2000. Furthermore, the industrial sub-sectors of Basic metals, Chemical and Petrochemical, Non-metallic minerals and Paper & Pulp were identified as the sectors with the highest potential for the policy influence. The main attention in this thesis is, however, focused on to the so-called energy-economy nexus. The estimation results indicate the conservation hypothesis, i.e. a causality running from GDP to energy consumption, is the most suitable hypothesis for the Czech Republic's data during the period 1996-2011. The methodology proposed is based on the causality testing of I(1) variables and the determination of the sign of the causality based on the accumulated generalized impulse responses. The results show the inclusion of the energy price variable and the sign determination is the preferable choice in the energy-economy nexus identification. The dominance of the industrial sector in the Czech economy is also confirmed by the results of the energy-economy testing. The energy conservation policy attention should be paid predominantly to the reduction of the consumption of the solid fuels and the final energy and electricity consumption of the industrial sector.
