Academic motivation in early adolescence in the context of psychosocial factors

Abstract:

Tato práce mapuje za využití kvantitativního výzkumného designu na datovém souboru z roku 2004 akademickou motivaci u českých adolescentů (12 – 14 let), kdy byla pro tyto účely využita data z mezinárodního projektu Social and Health Assessment (SAHA). Respondenti pocházeli z krajských měst v České republice. Ve vztahu k akademické motivaci zohledňujeme souvislosti pohlaví a vybrané dimenze vztahu rodič-adolescent, internalizované psychopatologie a školního prostředí a vztahu ke škole. Vztahy mezi proměnnými byly měřeny skrze vybrané škály dotazníku SAHA zaměřené na ty konstrukty, které jsme zkoumali. Ve výsledcích byl prokázán vliv jak některých dimenzí vztahu rodič-dítě, tak některých dimenzí internalizované psychopatologie a školního prostředí a vztahu ke škole na akademickou motivaci. Výsledky dále zdůraznily důležitost podpory rodiny a učitele pro akademickou motivaci a lepší studijní výsledky. Při porovnávání pohlaví jsme zjistili, že dívky mívají vyšší míru akademické motivace než chlapci a vyšší míru úzkosti ve spojitosti s akademickou motivací, stejně tak i vyšší míru somatických symptomů ve spojitosti s úzkostí. Náš výzkum má přesah zejména do intervenčních programů pro školy a/nebo pro rodiny.

Abstract:

Using a quantitative research design, this paper maps academic motivation among Czech adolescents (12-14 years old) using data from the international Social and Health Assessment (SAHA) project from the year 2004. Respondents came from regional cities in the Czech Republic. In relation to academic motivation, we take into account the gender context and selected dimensions of the parent-adolescent relationship, internalized psychopathology and school environment and relationship to school. The relationships between the variables were measured through selected scales of the SAHA questionnaire focusing on the constructs we examined. The results showed the influence of some dimensions of the parent-child relationship as well as some dimensions of internalized psychopathology and school environment and relationship with school on academic motivation. The results further highlighted the importance of family and teacher support for academic motivation and better academic achievement. When comparing the sexes, we found that girls had higher levels of academic motivation than boys and also higher levels of anxiety in association with academic motivation, as well as higher levels of somatic symptoms in association with anxiety. Our research is particularly important for intervention programs for schools and/or for families.
