Gothic resonances in Iain Banks' The Wasp Factory

Abstract:

The thesis will be focusing on the story of The Wasp Factory written by Iain Banks in 1984 and how the different aspects, features, characters, plot twists and main themes of the novel's storyline are connected in the genre of Gothic fiction. The prominent features discussed in the thesis include many descriptions of murder, violence, aggression and sardonic humor. The goal of the thesis is to show and prove that a novel with such gothic features exists in a relational sense with the culture of its origin and both reflects and modifies the genre it belongs to. Banks' oeuvre in general and this novel in particular are exemplary representations of Banks' opposition to Thatcherite monetarism in the UK, specifically as it affected Scottish culture. The author of the thesis does not agree politically with the author of the novel and is only going to discuss the important topics depicted in the novel including the protagonist, his behavior, surroundings and generally the gritty and dark atmosphere of the novel.

Abstract:

Tato práce se bude zaměřovat na příběh The Wasp Factory napsáno Iainem Banskem v roce 1984 a jak různé aspekty, prvky, postavy, zápletky a hlavní témata příběhové linie románu jsou navzájem propojeny v žánru gotické fikce. Prominentní prvky probrány v práci obsahují mnoho popisů vražd, násilí, agrese a sardonického humoru. Cílem práce je dokázat, že román s takovými gotickými prvky existuje v relaci s původní kulturou a také odrazuje a upravuje žánr do kterého román patří. Banksovo celková práce a tento román jsou reprezentativním příkladem Banskovy opozice proti Thatcherovskému monetarismu ve Velké Británii, hlavně taky proto, že to ovlivňovalo skotskou kulturu. Autor této práce politicky nesouhlasí s autorem románu, a proto jen prodiskutuje důležitá témata vyobrazena v knize, včetně protagonisty, jeho chování, okolí a celkově temné atmosféry v románu.
