Translation into English: A Case Study of a Czech Museum

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá specifiky muzejních textů a jejich překladů na příkladu textů z Technického muzea v Brně. Cílem práce je uvést problematiku překladů muzejních textů, analyzovat překlady v daném muzeu a připravit terminologický glosář, který by toto muzeum mohlo využít při přípravě dalších textů nebo jejich překladu. První kapitoly práce se zabývají teoretickým úvodem do problematiky, především charakteristikou muzejních textů (panelové texty a popisky) a obtížemi při jejich překladu. Jelikož se muzea zabývají různými úzce specializovanými překlady, je důležité zmínit také téma terminologie a termínů. V dalších částech práce se pracuje s korpusy a korpusovými nástroji a proto je nutné představit jak korpusy, tak možnosti jejich využití v překladu a práci s terminologií. Nejprve proběhla analýza překladu textů, která odhalila různé chyby od překlepů po špatný přepis jmen, nekonzistentní přepis české diakritiky, špatné psaní dat v angličtině atd. Další část analýzy byla založena na sestavení korpusů v rozhraní Sketch Engine. Následné srovnání seznamů nejčastěji používaných přídavných jmen, podstatných jmen a sloves mezi panelovými texty a popiskami, stejně tak jako mezi překladem v českém muzeu a texty v britských a amerických muzeích, poukázalo na rozdílné využití jazyka v těchto textech. Cílem závěrečné části této práce bylo vytvoření terminologického glosáře pro výstavy nožířství, metalurgie a železářství v Technickém muzeu v Brně. K získání potenciálních termínů byla použita funkce keywords and terms extraction v rozhraní Sketch Engine a správnost termínů byla ověřena na specializovaných webových stránkách věnujících se daným tématům, např. v internetové verzi Encyklopedie Britannica.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with museum texts and their specifics in translation, which is shown on the case of the Technical Museum in Brno. The aim of the thesis is to discuss the problems that translators may encounter when translating museum texts, to analyze the translations in this particular museum and to create a glossary of terms for the museum. The first chapters of the thesis provide a theoretical background for the whole thesis. Specifics of museum texts, their types (panel texts and exhibition labels) and their translation are discussed. As museums in general focus on a variety of fields of expertise, they have to deal with specialized terminology, and thus a background for terminology, a term and language for special purposes is provided. Because further parts of the thesis use the Sketch Engine interface, the whole topic of corpora and its use in translation and terminology management was introduced. The main part of the thesis focuses on the Technical Museum in Brno and its permanent exhibitions. At first, the analysis of the museum texts and their translations was carried out, which revealed a variety of mistakes including spelling errors, incorrect writing of dates, inconsistencies in transfer of proper names and Czech diacritics. The analysis continued with the compilation of corpora in the Sketch Engine interface in order to compare the language used in the panel texts and the exhibition labels, as well as to show the differences between the translations from the Czech museum with the texts written in English used in British and American museums. The final part of the work was producing a glossary of specialized terms used in the exhibitions in the Technical Museum in Brno (focusing on metallurgy, iron mastering and cutlery). The terms were extracted using the keywords and term extraction tool in the Sketch Engine interface and the results were verified in the corpus of foreign museum texts and web pages specialized in the subject.
