Over-Use of Czech for Communication in English Lessons at Primary and Lower-Secondary Schools

Abstract:

Diplomová práce "Nadměrné používání češtiny pro komunikaci v hodinách anglického jazyka na základních školách" pojednává o tom, že se mateřský jazyk v hodinách anglického jazyka nadměrně používá i přesto, že hlavním cílem současné výuky cizích jazyků by měl být rozvoj schopnosti žáků komunikovat v cílovém jazyce. Hlavním vyučovacím jazykem v hodinách angličtiny by se tudíž měla stát angličtina. V teoretické části jsou zkoumány některé důležité faktory, které se zdají ovlivňovat téma práce, zároveň s komunikativním přístupem, který je brán jako podporující eliminaci nadměrného množství mateřského jazyka používaného v hodinách. Také jsou zmíněny některé pedagogické situace vhodné pro používání angličtiny, stejně jako ty, ve kterých může být použita čeština. Praktická část popisuje v první řadě metody použité pro výzkum. Pak je tento výzkum analyzován, aby se zjistilo, zda je český jazyk využíván v hodinách angličtiny nadměrně a zda faktory, zmíněné v teoretické části, opravdu ovlivňují - a do jaké míry - téma práce.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis "Over-Use of Czech for Communication in English Lessons at Primary and Lower-Secondary Schools" deals with the fact that mother tongue is over-used in English lessons in spite of the main goal of foreign language teaching which should be the development of ability of learners to communicate in the target language. Thus English should become the main language used in English lessons. In the theoretical part, some significant factors which appear to influence the theme of the thesis are explored, together with communicative approach as supportive for eliminating the excessive amount of mother tongue used in lessons. Also some pedagogical situations where English is suitable to be introduced, as well as those where Czech can be implemented are mentioned. The practical part describes in the first place the methods used for research. Then the research is analysed to find out if Czech is over-used in English classes and if the factors mentioned in the theoretical part really influence - and to what extent - the theme of the thesis.
