Fluctuating asymmetry of dermatoglyphic and morphometric traits of human hand

Abstract:

Fluctuating asymmetry (small random departures from perfect symmetry) is commonly used as a measure of developmental instability of bilaterally symmetrical morphological traits. The thesis presents a study of the dermatoglyphic and morphometric traits of human hand studied on images obtained by standardized method of scanning. Participants were 130 adult men and women and 26 individuals with diagnosis of transsexuality. The major aim of this study was to compare fluctuating asymmetry among morphometric and dermatoglyphic traits of the same organ – human hand, specifically finger, among studied samples and test several hypotheses about morphogenesis of human hand according to row-related factor regulating interrelation of phalanges. Dermatogplyphic traits were not appropriate for fluctuating asymmetry estimate because of huge measurement error. Morphometric traits in contrary had a high repeatability and low percentage of measurement error. Following results were obtained: No differences among samples were found when fluctuating asymmetry was obtained from only one trait, suggesting that one trait is a poor indicator of developmental instability. Significance tests for differences in fluctuating asymmetry that combine information from several traits revealed significant differences among traits – simple traits (phalanges), compositing the complex trait (finger), show much higher fluctuating asymmetry than the corresponding complex trait. The extent of fluctuating asymmetry increased in disto-proximal direction in all fingers and in radio-ulnar direction within the phalangeal rows. Strong and highly significant positive correlation was observed between fluctuating asymmetry and coefficient of variation of studied traits. Extent of fluctuating asymmetry variation among samples depends on the traits. There were no significant associations between multivariate FA index and age, weight, height, waist-to-hip ratio, 2D4D ratio or number of sibling and older brothers in men. Despite the fact that fluctuating asymmetry is a controversial phenomenon, it's study seems to be meaningful within the contex of morphogenesis of paired structures.

Abstract:

Fluktuačná asymetria (malé náhodné odchýlky od dokonalej symetrie) sa obyčajne používa ako miera vývinovej nestability bilaterálne symetrických organizmov. Táto práca je výsledkom štúdia dermatoglyfických a morfometrických znakov z naskenovaných štandardizovaných snímok ľudských rúk. Študovaný súbor tvorí 130 dospelých mužov a žien a 26 jedincov s diagnózou transsexualizmu. Hlavným cieľom práce bolo porovnať fluktuačnú asymetriu morfometrických a dermatoglyfických znakov ľudskej ruky, najmä prstov ruky, a otestovať niekoľko hypotéz týkajúcich sa morfogenézy ruky z hľadiska väčšieho prepojenia falangov v rade. Dermatoglyfické znaky neboli na odhad fluktuačnej asymetrie vhodné kvôli značnej chybe merania, na rozdiel od morfometrických znakov, kde bola opakovateľnosť merania vysoká a chyba merania nízka. Získané boli nasledovné výsledky: Pri stanovení miery fluktuačnej asymetrie len z jedného znaku neboli zaznamenané žiadne rozdiely medzi skúmanými skupinami, čo značí, že asymetria jedného znaku je slabým indikátorom vývinovej nestability. Testovanie rozdielov vo fluktuačnej asymetrii s použitím viacerých znakov súčasne odhalilo významné rozdiely vo fluktuačnej asymetrii medzi znakmi – jednotlivé znaky (falangy) tvoriace znak komplexný (prst) vykazovali vyšší stupeň fluktuačnej asymetrie v porovnaní s príslušným komplexným znakom. Miera fluktuačnej asymetrie sa zvyšovala v distoproximálnom smere vo všetkých prstoch a v rámci falangeálnych radov v smere radioulnárnom. Silná a vysoko významná kladná korelácia bola pozorovaná medzi fluktuačnou asymetriou študovaných znakov a ich variačným koeficientom vo veľkosti znaku. Rozdiely v miere fluktuačnej asymetrie medzi skúmanými skupinami záviseli na študovaných znakoch. Nebolo zaznamenané žiadne významné spojenie medzi mierou fluktuačnej asymetrie vyjadrenej kompozitným indexom a vekom, hmotnosťou, výškou, pomerom pás-boky, pomerom dĺžok prstov 2D4D, alebo s počtom súrodencov a starších bratov u mužov. Napriek tomu, že fluktuačná asymetria predstavuje kontroverzný fenomén, jej štúdium sa zdá byť zmysluplné v kontexte morfogenézy párových štruktúr.
