Social representation of masculinity/feminity by transsexuals

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je prozkoumání sociálních reprezentací maskulinity a femininity u transsexuálů. Teoretická část se věnuje základním koncepcím relevantním pro tuto diplomovou práci, kterými jsou teorie sociálních reprezentací, gender ve vztahu k pohlaví a společnosti a fenomén transsexuality. Empirickou část diplomové práce tvoří výzkum s kvalitativním designem založeným na metodě zakotvené teorie. V jeho rámci byly uskutečněny dvě ohniskové skupiny, kterých se zúčastnilo devět FtM transsexuálů. Během analýzy dat vnikly čtyři základní kategorie, které byly základem pro budování teoretického rámce této práce. Centrální kategorie popisuje proces změny sociálních reprezentací femininity na sociální reprezentace maskulinity. Tento proces změny byl charakterizován dimenzí já - ostatní, jejímž přínosem bylo popsání vlivu genderových kategorií jako organizačně-strukturálních společenských jednotek na vývoj genderové identity jedinců a na jejich sebepojetí.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to explore the social representations of masculinity and femininity among the transsexuals. The theoretical part deals with the basic phenomena relevant to this thesis, namely the theory of social representations, gender in relation to sex and society and the phenomenon of transsexuality. The empirical part of the thesis consists of a research with qualitative design based on the grounded theory method. Within its framework two focus groups were carried out, attended by nine FtM transsexuals. During data analysis four basic categories have penetrated, which were the basis for building theoretical frame of this paper. Central category describes the process of changing the social representations of femininity in the social representations of masculinity. This process of change was characterized in the dimension Self - Others, whose goal was to describe the influence of gender categories as social-structural units on the development of gender identity of individuals and their self-concept.
