Charismatic Leadership in the Context of Cultural Institutions

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na roli a význam charismatického leadershipu ve specifickém prostředí kulturních institucí. V tomto typu organizací jsou tradiční procesy vedení obohaceny o kreativní a inspirující elementy, což koresponduje s prvky charismatického leadershipu. Tento styl vedení je však odbornou veřejností přijímán rozporuplně. Teoretická část textu poskytuje přehled historických souvislostí včetně kritického zhodnocení problematiky. Praktická část na téma navazuje kvalitativním výzkumem. Jejím cílem bylo prozkoumat přístup k vedení pěti vybraných charismatických leaderů působících v kulturních institucích, zmapovat pozitivní a negativní stránky jejich stylu vedení a posoudit tak funkčnost charismatického leadershipu v daném prostředí. Výběr reprezentativních respondentů proběhl s využitím nástroje stupnice charismatického leadershipu podle Congera a Kanungo (1997) a hlavní výzkum byl proveden polostrukturovanými rozhovory. Výzkum jednoznačně nepotvrdil zvláštní význam charismatických leaderů v kulturních institucích, nicméně prokázal jejich pozitivní vliv na angažovanost a motivovanost zaměstnanců.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the role and importance of charismatic leadership in the specific environment of cultural institutions. In this type of organizations, traditional leadership processes are supplemented by creative and inspirational elements, which corresponds with the attributes of charismatic leadership. However, this leadership style is contradictorily accepted by experts. The theoretical part provides an overview of the historical context, including a critical evaluation of the topic. The empirical part incorporates qualitative research. Its aim was to explore the leadership approach of five selected charismatic leaders working in cultural institutions, to identify the positive and negative aspects of their leadership style and thus to assess the functionality of charismatic leadership in the given environment. The selection of respondents was done using the Conger-Kanungo scale of charismatic leadership (1997) and the main research was conducted through semi-structured interviews. The research did not clearly confirm the particular importance of charismatic leaders in cultural institutions, but it did demonstrate their positive influence on employee engagement and motivation.
