Horace Kallen's Concept of Cultural Pluralistic America

Abstract:

The thesis is devoted to the study of Horace Kallen?s attitudes toward American cultural identity. Horace Kallen is a personality whose area of focus was immigration, more precisely immigration from Europe to the United States. He is also the founder of the concept of cultural pluralism which is the topic of this thesis. The first chapter deals with immigration into the United States and gives a picture of two different concepts: cultural pluralism and the melting pot. Furthermore, the chapter summarizes the most important political events of the period. The second chapter examines Kallen?s criticism of the idea of an American society as a ?melting pot?. The third chapter deals with the social aspects of the author?s work and studies the development of the concept of American cultural identity. The fourth chapter discusses the attitudes of Horace Kallen and other eminent authors toward ethnic minorities and democracy in the United States. It evaluates data obtained through a careful analysis of the socio-cultural groups living in the United States carried out by scholars and finally, it assesses the work of Horace Kallen, both the benefits and limitations of his theoretical views.

Abstract:

Práce se věnuje studii konceptu kulturního pluralismu v pojetí Horace Kallena a také vývoji jeho postojů k americké identitě. Horace Kallen je osobnost, která se intenzivně věnovala otázce přistěhovalectví, respektive imigraci z Evropy do Spojených států amerických a vytvořila koncept kulturního pluralismu. První kapitola bakalářské práce se zabývá imigrací do USA a podává obraz dvou odlišných pojmů, kterými jsou kulturní pluralismus a tavicí kotel. Kapitola rovněž shrnuje nejdůležitější okamžiky z politického dění daného období. Druhá kapitola popisuje Kallenovu kritiku představy americké společnosti jako ?tavicího kotle?. Třetí kapitola zasazuje Kallenova díla do společenského kontextu a zabývá se studiem vývoje představ a konceptů americké kulturní identity. Čtvrtá kapitola se zabývá postoji Horace Kallena a dalších významných osobností k etnickým menšinám a demokracii ve Spojených státech, hodnotí údaje, které badatelé získali pečlivým analyzováním sociokulturních skupin žijících ve Spojených státech amerických. Závěrečná kapitola nabízí zhodnocení odkazu Horace Kallena, přínosy i nedostatky jeho teoretických názorů.
