The image of Buddha in Czech professional and popular literature (1918 - 1948)

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské diplomové práce je prostřednictvím textové analýzy odborných i popularizačních textů vydaných ve zvoleném období (1918 – 1948) v češtině zjistit, jaký byl obraz Buddhy v českém prostředí ve vztahu k aktuálním společenským otázkám. Zvolené období odpovídá počátkům etablování samostatného českého bádání v oblasti buddhismu, které se rozvíjelo zejména v meziválečném období. Cílem práce je zjistit, jak byla postava Buddhy prezentována českým čtenářům s ohledem na dobové sociální, náboženské a kulturní otázky, včetně úvah o vhodnosti buddhismu pro Evropana. Textová analýza se zaměří na práce odborníků Vincence Lesného a Otakara Pertolda, ale i filozofa Rudolfa Máši a Leopolda Procházky jako výrazného popularizátora a stoupence buddhismu. V práci půjde o to zasadit obraz Buddhy v dobové literatuře do kontextu otázek tehdy aktuálních, týkajících se zejména vztahu buddhismu a křesťanství, otázky vhodnosti buddhismu pro Evropana a jeho možné adaptace na Západě. Výzkumné otázky, na něž práce přinese odpověď, zní takto: Byl Buddha v očích těchto autorů vnímán spíše pozitivně nebo negativně? Vnímali a prezentovali Buddhu jako sociálního a náboženského reformátora, nebo jako bytost s nadlidskými schopnostmi? Jak autoři argumentují své názory s ohledem na dobovou debatu o povaze buddhismu? Nacházíme zde obecné tendence, nebo jsou zřejmé podstatné rozdíly v pojetí Buddhy v pracích jednotlivých autorů? Je patrný nějaký názorový vývoj v čase u jednotlivých autorů? Výsledky práce významně prohloubí dosavadní znalosti o počátcích české buddhologie a poskytnou podklad pro další bádání o jejím vztahu k dobovému vývoji v zahraničí.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is through textual analysis of professional and popularization texts published in the selected period (1918 - 1948) in Czech to find out what the image of the Buddha was in the Czech environment in relation to current social issues. Selected period corresponds to the beginnings of the establishment of the independent Czech research in Buddhism, which developed mainly in the interwar period. The aim is to determine how the figure of the Buddha was presented to Czech readers with regard to period social, religious and cultural issues, including the consideration of the suitability of Buddhism for a European. Textual analysis will focus on the work of experts Vincenc Lesný and Otakar Pertold, but even philosopher Rudolf Máša and Leopold Procházka as a significant popularizer and follower of Buddhism. The point of the thesis is to set the Buddha image to period literature in the context of current issues dealing with particular regard of Buddhism and Christianity, questions of the suitability of Buddhism for a European and its possible adaptation in the West. Research questions to which this thesis will bring the answer is this: Was the Buddha in the eyes of the authors perceived rather positively or negatively? Did they perceive and present the Buddha as a social and religious reformer or a being with superhuman abilities? How the authors argue for their views with regard to the period discussion about the nature of Buddhism? Do we find here a general trend, or are there obvious significant differences in the concept of the Buddha in the works of individual authors? Is there any development in opinion over time by individual authors? The results of this thesis will significantly deepen existing knowledge about the origins of Czech buddhology and provide the basis for further study of its relation to the period development abroad.
