Support of Children Living on the Streets During a Pandemic: A Case Study in Kenya

Abstract:

Pandemie covid-19 přinesla celosvětovou krizi. Její průběh se však značně lišil v zemích zatížených chudobou a fenomény s ní spojenými. Jednou z těchto zemí je i Keňa, která se dlouhodobě neúspěšně potýká s problematikou dětí žijících na ulicích chudinských čtvrtí. Cílem této práce je popsat dopad pandemie na děti žijící na ulici a možné intervence k jejich zmírnění. Tři rozhovory byly vedeny v průběhu období srpen 2020 – září 2021 s ředitelkou dobročinné organizace Alfajiri Street Kids, která v Nairobi funguje již 10 let. Ty byly podpořeny doplňujícími rozhovory s třemi dětmi tou dobou žijícími na ulici. Nařízení vlády snažící se zamezit šíření nemoci způsobilo silný ekonomický kolaps a strmý nárůst obyvatelstva žijícího v extrémní chudobě. To provázel nárůst pouličního násilí jak ze stran obyvatel, tak policie. Efektivním se ukázalo co možná nejspěšnější přemístění dětí z hlavního města na venkov. Dětem, které ve slumech zůstaly, organizace Alfajiri nabízela bohaté programy jako kreslení, judo, tanec. Tímto způsobem se snažila nahrazovat strukturu dne, kterou dětem běžně dává škola. Nemoc Keňu silně nezasáhla. Obyvatelé se nákazy po pár měsících přestali bát. Hlad a chudoba však v ulicích Nairobi zůstávají dál.

Abstract:

The pandemic of covid-19 brought a global crisis. However, its course varied considerably in countries burdened by poverty. One of these countries is Kenya, which has long struggled with the issue of children living on the streets of slums. This work aims to describe the impact of the pandemic on children living on the streets and possible interventions to alleviate it. Three interviews were conducted during August 2020 - September 2021 with the director of the charity organisation Alfajiri Street Kids, operating in Nairobi for ten years. These were supported by additional interviews with three children currently living on the streets. A government decree to prevent the spread of the disease has caused a severe economic collapse and a steep increase in the population living in extreme poverty. This was accompanied by an increase in street violence from both the population and the police. Therefore, Alfajiri attempted to relocate children from the capital to the countryside. For children who remained in the slums, Alfajiri offered rich programs such as art, martial art and dance. In this way, they tried to replace the day's structure that school typically gives children. The disease did not hit Kenya hard. After a few months, the fear of covid-19 faded away. But hunger and poverty remain on the streets of Nairobi.
