Financial literacy of seniors

Abstract:

Sčítání lidu v roce 2021 potvrdilo dlouhodobý trend nárůstu počtu seniorů. V roce 2021 senioři tvořili 20,41 % obyvatel. 48 % seniorů žijících samostatně přiznalo, že se dostávají do špatné finanční situace a nebudou schopni plnit své finanční závazky. Aby se v této situaci nedostali do exekucí a předlužení, je důležitá finanční gramotnost. Řada vědeckých studií zjistila, že s věkem míra finanční gramotnosti u seniorů klesá. Cílem práce bylo zjistit míru finanční gramotnosti seniorů žijících v samostatné domácnosti v Teplicích. Dotazníkovým šetřením byla získána data, pomocí nichž bylo vyhodnoceno, v jakých oblastech finanční gramotnosti mají senioři nejméně znalostí, vliv charakteristiky seniora na míru finanční gramotnosti a zda existuje vztah mezi finanční a digitální gramotností. Vztahy byly zjišťovány pomocí chí kvadrát testu a regrese. Výsledky výzkumu ukázaly, že senioři samostatně žijící v Teplicích mají poměrně vysokou finanční gramotnost. Nejméně znalostí mají senioři u pojmu debetní karta, tato neznalost ovšem nijak neovlivňuje jejich rozhodování o financích. Bylo také zjištěno, že nejvyšší finanční gramotnost má senior, který žije s partnerem(kou), je vzdělanější, většinu života pracoval jako bílý límeček (podnikatelé, lékaři), je ženatý (vdaná), zvídavý a používá internet. Regrese následně potvrdila, že finanční gramotnost je závislá na digitální gramotnosti, tedy čím vyšší digitální gramotnost senior má, tím má vyšší finanční gramotnost. Výsledky jsou přínosné pro zdokonalení vzdělávacích akcí v tomto oboru. Upozorňují na oblasti finanční gramotnosti, ve kterých mají senioři nejméně znalostí a pomáhají identifikovat nejslabší skupiny seniorů, na které mají organizace poskytující vzdělávání cílit. Nakonec práce informuje o zaměření se na základy digitální gramotnosti pro zvyšování finanční gramotnosti seniorů.

Abstract:

The 2021 census confirmed a long-term trend of an increasing number of seniors. In 2021, seniors made up 20.41 % of the population. Of seniors living independently, 48 % admitted to experiencing financial difficulties and being unable to fulfill their financial obligations. Financial literacy is important to prevent seniors from falling into debt and facing enforcement proceedings. Numerous scientific studies have found that financial literacy decreases with age among seniors. The aim of this study was to determine the level of financial literacy among seniors living independently in Teplice. Data was collected through a survey to evaluate the areas where seniors have the least knowledge of financial literacy, the influence of senior characteristics on their financial literacy, and whether there is a relationship between financial and digital literacy. Relationships were determined using the chi-squared test and regression. The research results showed that seniors living independently in Teplice have relatively high financial literacy. Seniors have the least knowledge about debit cards, but this lack of knowledge does not affect their financial decision-making. It was also found that the highest level of financial literacy was among seniors who live with a partner, are more educated, have worked most of their lives as white-collar workers (entrepreneurs, doctors), are married, curious, and use the internet. Regression subsequently confirmed that financial literacy is dependent on digital literacy, meaning that the higher a senior's digital literacy, the higher their financial literacy. These results are beneficial for improving educational activities in this area. They highlight the areas of financial literacy in which seniors have the least knowledge and help identify the weakest groups of seniors on which organizations providing education should focus. Finally, the study suggests focusing on the basics of digital literacy to increase financial literacy among seniors.
