An Experimental Project - The Forest

Abstract:

Ve své bakalářské práci jsem experimentovala s přenosem přírody do virtuálního světa. Práce je tvořena dvěma výstupy - instalací a virtuální realitou. Nosnou myšlenkou díla je poukázat na krásu přírody symbolizovanou lesem, a současně na hrozbu její devastace působením lidské činnosti. Důležitým momentem práce je rovněž poukázání na skutečnost, že ani sebelépe, řekněme až hyper-realisticky zpracované vizualizace v nejmodernějších formách, nemohou nahradit skutečný zážitek lesa. První a zároveň hlavní část práce je prezentována jako instalace složená z hardwarových komponent, videa, zvuku, osvětlení a objektem, vytištěným na 3d tiskárně. V prostoru o rozloze přibližně 50 m? jsou v různých výškách umístěny obrazovky různého stáří, na kterých běží videa, které jsem vytvořila na základě mnou vytvořených 3d skenů lesa. Tyto skeny jsou vytvořené pomocí metody fotogrammetrie. Součástí této instalace je také objekt vytisknutý na 3d tiskárně. Jde o model pařezu, který vznikl metodou fotogrammetrie a následně byl vytisknut pomocí 3d tisku. Instalace je doprovázena audiem. Zvuková stopa se skládá z nahrávek lesa, které se z nezměněné formy postupně mění do nepřirozených zvuků a je patrné digitální zpracování zvuku. Druhá část této práce je interaktivní příběh ve virtuální realitě. Uživatel se octne uprostřed lesa, který působí idylicky, až snově. Když se rozhlédne kolem sebe, uvidí několik bodů emitujících světlo, které mají stejnou vizuální podobu jako hráčovy ruce. Bodů se může při objevování lesa dotknout. Pokud se dotkne všech, začne se svět kolem něj měnit. Z idylického světa se stane nepříjemné prázdné tmavé prostředí a změna se již nedá zvrátit. Takto příběh končí a po chvíli se opět restartuje na začátek.

Abstract:

In my bachelor thesis I experimented with the transfer of nature into the virtual world. The work consists of two outputs - installation and virtual reality. The main idea of the work is to point out the beauty of nature symbolized by the forest, and at the same time the threat of its devastation by human activity. An important moment of the work is also to point out the fact that even the best, let's say hyper-realistically processed visualizations in the most modern forms, cannot replace the real experience of the forest. The first theme is presented as an installation composed of hardware components, video, audio, lighting and object. Screens of different ages are mounted at various horizontal heights and they are placed on approximately 50 m2. On each screen, 3d scans of different parts of the trees, such as a trunk, branches and crowns, are projected. Each screen has its loop, and the style of 3d scans corresponds to reality, so scans of branches are projected on screens located on stands, scans of the lower parts of the trunk on screens located on the floor etc. Everything distributed organically in space. The central object of the installation is a life-size sculpture of a tree stump done in high-gloss 3D printing. The compositions complement the authentic sounds of the forest (birds singing, trees rustling, branches cracking). These sounds are partially transformed into synthetic forms distorting the sound of nature (e.g. the birdsong, which is pulled out after a few minutes to digital beeps, or there are various echoes, etc.). The second part of this work is a short interactive story in virtual reality. The user finds himself in the middle of a forest that looks idyllic and even dreamy. When he looks around, he sees several points emitting light. He can touch them. If he touches all lights, the world around him will begin to change. The idyllic forest becomes an unpleasant empty dark environment, and the change can no longer be reversed. This is how the story ends, and after a while, it restarts to the beginning.
