"There Is Gold in Them Drills"-the use of drilling in contemporary ELT to teach vocabulary

Abstract:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce popisuje výzkum zaměřený na porovnání efektivity dvou metod na výuku anglického jazyka – drilu a komunikačních aktivit – při vyučování slovní zásoby dospělých edukantů různých jazykových pokročilostí. Cílem tohoto výzkumu je zjistit, jestli se dril může považovat za efektivní metodu na výuku slovní zásoby dospělých edukantů vzhledem k jejich receptivním dovednostem vytvářet asociace mezi formou a významem jednotlivých slov. Efektivita drilu byla stanovena na základě porovnání této metody s metodou „role-play“, která se řadí mezi metody komunikační. Navíc bylo využito seznamů slov, které studenti sestavili sami, pro porovnání cíleného učení se slovní zásoby s částečně cíleným učením se, kdy studenti narazí na dané slovo při procvičování dovedností číst nebo poslouchat v anglickém jazyce. První čtyři kapitoly této práce nastiňují teoretický základ, ze kterého výzkum vychází, jako jsou současná situace a trendy ve vyučování cizího jazyka a faktory ovlivňující efektivitu vyučovacího procesu podmíněné edukanty a obsahem vyučování. Tato část se dále zabývá popisem a kategorizací jednotlivých typů drilu. Metodologie výzkumu, která je popsána v páté kapitole, sestává z kvalitativních a kvantitativních dat. Kvalitativní data poukazují na to, jak edukanti vnímají učení se slovní zásoby a jaké mají preference ve stylech učení. Kvantitativní data následně zobrazují, jakou úroveň receptivních dovedností edukanti dosáhli na základě využití výše uvedených metod. Jako respondenti pro tento výzkum byly vybrány dvě skupiny – skupina středně pokročilých (úroveň B1+ podle CEFR) a pokročilých (úroveň B2 podle CEFR) edukantů, kteří navštěvují konverzační kurzy Jazykové školy při Filozofické fakultě Masarykovy univerzity. Tyto skupiny jsou vícejazyčné, skládající se z edukantů z Čech, Ukrajiny a Slovenska, převážnou část edukantů však tvoří Češi. Výsledky analýzy kvalitativních dat ukázaly, že obě skupiny edukantů nemají ve zvyku dohledávat komplexní informace o jednotlivých slovech při učení se slovní zásoby a spoléhají zejména na překlad do rodného jazyka. Mezi nejčastější uvedené metody pro učení se slovní zásoby patří karty se slovy a jejich definicemi a učení se za využití online softwaru. Analýza kvantitativních dat ukázala, že edukanti dosáhli nejlepších výsledků u sady slov, která byla prezentována a procvičována za pomoci komunikačních aktivit, tedy „role-play“. Výsledky získané tímto výzkumem proto nepotvrdily počáteční domněnku, že dril může být považován za efektivní metodu výuky anglické slovní zásoby.

Abstract:

This thesis provides a detailed description of research on the effectiveness of two different teaching methods – drilling and communicative activities – as they are used to teach vocabulary to adult learners of English of different language proficiencies. The aim of this research is to investigate whether drilling is an effective method for teaching vocabulary to adult learners of English in respect to learners’ output receptive skills of form-meaning associations forming. The effectiveness of drilling is assessed based on the comparison of this method with role plays, which belong to the category of communicative activities. In addition, learners’ own vocabulary lists are included to compare intentional, direct vocabulary learning with semi-intentional vocabulary learning in which learners encounter an item while practicing reading and/or listening skills. The first four chapters of this thesis introduce the theoretical concepts underlying the problematics of teaching English as a foreign language; individual variables affecting the effectiveness of the learning process conditioned by learners (teaching adults) and variables conditioned by the content of a lesson (teaching vocabulary); and description of various types of drilling techniques. As for the research methodology described in the fifth chapter, both qualitative and quantitative data are analysed. While the qualitative data are used to investigate the learners’ beliefs on vocabulary learning and their preferences for vocabulary learning strategies, the quantitative data are analysed to ascertain what level of receptive skills of form-meaning association forming the learners achieved. The sample represents one group of intermediate and one group of upper-intermediate adult learners of English who attend courses at the Masaryk University language school. The sample may be defined as multi-lingual (there are Czech, Ukrainian and Slovak learners), though most of the learners are Czech. The qualitative data analysis showed that the learners are not used to searching for complex information on language items, and they mainly rely on translations to their mother tongue. As for some specific learning technique, they mentioned word cards and online learning software. The quantitative data analysis showed that the learners scored the best with those language items which were practiced communicatively which means that the primary assumption on the effectiveness of drilling was not confirmed.
