Teaching CLIL in Distance Learning Conditions in Czech Secondary Schools

Abstract:

Účelem této práce je analyzovat přístupy k distančnímu učení ve středoškolském prostředí v kombinaci s metodologií CLIL. Za tímto účelem budou srovnány pohledy studentů i učitelů na výuku metodou CLIL jak prezenční formou v období před karanténou, tak i po několika měsících distančního učení v roce 2020. Práce se zaměří na výuku dějepisu a další obdobných předmětů v angličtině pro studenty všech ročníků na brněnské státní střední škole. Po rozboru metodologie CLIL jak obecně, tak i v kontextu dané školy, budou dále analyzovány příklady konkrétních třídních aktivit a zpětná vazba z několikaleté zkušenosti s "normálními" třídními scénaři. Poté se práce zaměří na distanční učení a příležitosti i výzvy, které přináší snaha replikovat středoškolskou výuku z domu pomocí digitálních technologií. Opět bude teorie porovnána s praktickými zkušenostmi získanými při vyučování CLIL online během karantény v roce 2020, které budou podložené mimo jiné výsledky z velkého množství dotazníků, jež vyplnili učitelé i studenti. Závěr práce zhodnotí užitečnost různých technik v rámci CLIL při aplikaci na distanční učení.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse approaches to Distance Learning in the secondary school environment while using the methodology of CLIL. This will involve comparing students’ and teachers’ perceptions of CLIL instruction delivered face-to-face in pre-Lockdown conditions with those after months of online teaching in 2020. Specific reference will be given to the teaching of History and associated subjects in English to students from all years of a Brno state secondary school. After a review of what CLIL means both generally and in the context of the school in question, examples of specific classroom activities and feedback from several years of experience in “normal” classroom situations will be analysed. Next, attention will be focused on Distance Learning and the challenges and opportunities of replicating secondary school teaching from home using digital technologies. Again, this theory will be compared with the actual experience of teaching CLIL online during the Lockdown year of 2020, which will be supported by a large sample of feedback from the teachers and students themselves amongst other data. The conclusion will evaluate the usefulness of various CLIL techniques in the environment of Distance Learning.
