Analysis of the work of Pentti Linkola

Abstract:

The main aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyse the works of the Finnish environmentalist Pentti Linkola, the author of the book Can Life Prevail? A Radical Approach to the Environmental Crisis. The analysis of Linkola´s works is done through the introduction of his core thesis formulated in the aforementioned book, with the main focus on the identification of the roots of the ecologic crisis and its suggested solution. Following, Linkola´s attitudes are framed within the environmental ethics and philosophy, with the attention given mainly to its relation to the deep ecology, dialogue between the deep ecology and social ecology, topic of the authoritarian inclinations in environmental thinking and comparison of Linkola with other relevant authors. The thesis thus attempts to answer the following questions: What are the main features of Linkola´s philosophy? Is it possible to understand Linkola as a successor of the deep ecology tradition? Is it possible to characterize Linkola´s opinions in concordance with the concept of ecofascism? Is Linkola´s approach solitary, or are there to be found also other similar examples of green thinking? What consequences or risks emerge as a result of this analysis?

Abstract:

Hlavným cieľom tejto bakalárskej práce je analýza diela fínskeho environmentalistu Penttiho Linkolu, autora knihy Can Life Prevail? A Radical Approach to the Environmental Crisis. Analýza Linkolovho diela je realizovaná prostredníctvom predstavenia jeho základných téz formulovaných najmä v spomenutej knihe - so zameraním sa na identifikáciu príčin ekologickej krízy a jej navrhované riešenia. Linkolove postoje sú v práci následne zarámované na poli environmentálnej etiky a filozofie, so záujmom venovaným špecificky otázke nadväznosti na hlbinnú ekológiu, dialógu hlbinnej a sociálnej ekológie, téme autoritatívnych sklonov v environmentálnom myslení a komparácii Linkolu s inými relevantnými autormi. Práca sa teda snaží odpovedať napríklad na tieto otázky: Aké sú hlavné charakteristiky Linkolovej filozofie? Možno Linkolu považovať za pokračovateľa tradície hlbinnej ekológie? Je možné Linkolove názory charakterizovať z hľadiska termínu ekofašizmu? Je Linkolov prístup ojedinelý alebo nachádzame aj iné porovnateľné príklady zeleného myslenia? Aké dôsledky alebo riziká z uskutočnenej analýzy plynú?
