Secondray sex ratio in deer (Cervidae)

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se skládá z odborné a didaktické části. Odborná část této práce se zaměřuje na zkoumání vlivu několika různých faktorů s možným vlivem na sekundární poměr pohlaví, přežívání mláďat a plodnost samic u pěti druhů jelenovitých. Rodiče zřejmě mohou manipulovat poměr pohlaví jejich potomstva za účelem zvýšení jejich reprodukčního úspěchu. Cílem rodičovské investice je pak co možná největší počet vnoučat. Data pro účely této práce byla získána z databází tří zoologických zahrad a rovněž na základě pozorování zvířat v těchto zoologických zahradách. Nashromážděná data byla testována v programu SAS. Hlavními zkoumanými faktory s možným vlivem na sekundární poměr pohlaví byly věk (zkušenost) matky, její postavení v rámci dominanční hierarchie a taxonomická příslušnost. Pro potřeby této práce byla použita data o 807 jedincích. Konkrétně se jednalo o axisy (Axis axis), jeleny milu (Elaphurus davidianus), jeleny sika (Cervus nippon), wapiti sibiřské (Cervus canadensis sibiricus) a soby (Rangifer tarandus). Byl zjištěn signifikantní vliv věku a zkušenosti matky na poměr pohlaví potomstva v závislosti na "rodu". U "rodu" Cervus s věkem (zkušeností) matky poměr pohlaví jejího potomstva rostl, u sobů byl zjištěn opačný trend. Pro "rod" Cervus se tedy podařilo potvrdit platnost Trivers-Willardovy hypotézy. Vliv dominance zjištěn nebyl, a to pravděpodobně z důvodu malé velikosti vzorku. Byla však zjištěna pozitivní signifikantní korelace mezi pozicí samice v dominanční hierarchii a její plodností. Ve srovnání se submisivními samicemi se tedy dominantní samice páří častěji nebo u nich dochází méně často k potratům. Dále bylo zjištěno, že se s rostoucím věkem (zkušeností) matky zvyšuje šance na přežití jejího potomka. Ve srovnání s ostatními druhy byla zjištěna signifikantně větší úmrtnost u mláďat sobů. Dle očekávání byla do stáří tří měsíců mláděte zjištěna signifikantně větší úmrtnost u samců oproti samicím. Sekundární poměr pohlaví se tedy liší od poměru pohlaví u dospělých zvířat a neodpovídá tedy přesně výsledné rodičovské investici. Přínosem této práce je především zkoumání druhů jelenovitých, u kterých adaptivní sekundární poměr pohlaví dosud zkoumán nebyl, a vzájemné srovnání těchto druhů. Didaktická část této práce se skládá ze dvou částí. V rámci první části byla provedena analýza obsahu středoškolských učebnic věnujících se tématu jelenovitých. Tato práce pak může pomoci při výběru vhodné učebnice pro adekvátní předávání tohoto tématu žákům. Také zde upozorňuji na faktické chyby, kterých se některé z učebnic dopouští. V rámci druhé části byl vypracován návrh naučné tabule vysvětlující dominanční hierarchii a její projevy u jelenovitých. Vhodným umístěním takovéto naučné tabule je zoologická zahrada, kde může sloužit k edukaci nejen běžného návštěvníka, ale především pak školních skupin.

Abstract:

This master thesis consists of a scientific and a didactic part. The scientific part of this thesis focuses on examining the influence of several various factors with a possible influence on secondary sex ratio, survival of fawns and female fecundity in five deer species. Parents can apparently manipulate the sex ratio of their offspring to increase their reproduction success. The goal of parental investment is as big amount of grandchildren as possible. The data for the purposes of this thesis were acquired from the databases of three zoological gardens and through direct observation of animals in these zoological gardens. Acquired data were tested using the SAS program. The main studied factors with possible influence on secondary sex ratio were mother's age (experience), her rank in dominance hierarchy and taxonomic affiliation. For the purposes of this thesis, data about 807 individuals were used, including chitals (Axis axis), P?re David's deer (Elaphurus davidianus), sika deer (Cervus nippon), Altai wapitis (Cervus canadensis sibiricus) and reindeers (Rangifer tarandus). It was discovered that there is a significant influence of mother's age and experience on offspring sex ratio depending on the "genus". In "genus" Cervus increased with mother's age (experience) also the sex ratio of her offspring. In reindeers there was discovered an opposite trend. The validity of the Trivers-Willard hypothesis was also confirmed for the "genus" Cervus. The influence of the dominance rank was not discovered, most likely because of small sample size. However, a positive correlation between female's dominance rank and her fecundity was discovered. In comparison with subordinate females, dominate females also copulate more frequently or are less likely to have a miscarriage. It was also discovered that with a mother's increasing age (experience), the chance of her offspring's survival is also increasing. In comparison with other species, a significantly higher mortality rate was discovered among reindeer fawns according to expectations. A significantly higher mortality rate was discovered in males compared to females by the age of three months. The secondary sex ratio also differs from the adult sex ratio and does not correspond exactly with final parental investment. The contribution of this thesis is primarily the examination of deer species in which the adaptive secondary sex ratio has not yet been studied, and mutual comparison of these species. The didactic part of this thesis consists of two parts. Within the first part, an analysis of the content of high school textbooks pertaining to deer was conducted. This thesis can assist in selecting an appropriate textbook for effectively conveying this topic to students. I also point out to factual errors, which are present in some of the textbooks. In the second part, a proposal of an informational board explaining dominance hierarchy and its manifestations in deer was conceived. A suitable location for placing such an information board would be a zoological garden, where it can serve to educate not only the general visitors, but primarily school groups.
