Mosques in Marseille and Toulouse - integration in the hands of a new generation?

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vývojem vztahů francouzského státu a muslimů, kteří do Francie přišli z (bývalých) kolonií. Práce se soustředí především na muslimy, kteří přišli do Francie ze zemí Magrebu (Alžírsko, Maroko, Tunisko) a časové období od vzniku kolonií (1830) až do současnosti. Tento vztah sleduji v průběhu tří stádií, která definoval Marcel Maussen, tedy kolonialismus, stádium koloniálních/zahraničních pracovníků a stádia občanství, a zaměřuji se na způsob, jakým jsou muslimští imigranti a jejich potomci začleňováni do francouzské společnosti. Data, se kterými pracuji, jsou vesměs sekundárního charakteru. Jedná se především o odborné vědecké články, dále pak využívám francouzská média. Pracuji ale i s informacemi získanými při komunikaci s toulouským imámem. Vzhledem k zaměření mé práce na vývoj vztahů v čase, je přístupem, který používám, historical process research. Jako metodu výzkumu jsem zvolila event – structure analysis a k analýze využívám program ETHNO. Výsledky analýzy ukazují, že islám byl ve všech jmenovaných obdobích využíván jako prostředek kontroly a asimilace. V období kolonií byla muslimská víra v původní podobě potlačována a muslimové byli formováni směrem k francouzským hodnotám. V období zahraničních pracovníků byl islám na území Francie podporován, a to s cílem zachovat vztah dočasných imigrantů k domovské zemi. A v posledních desetiletích je pak islám podporován, avšak v takové podobě, která přispívá k asimilaci nově příchozích muslimských imigrantů a hlavně nové generace muslimů do francouzské společnosti. Ačkoli jsou jednotlivá období velmi odlišná vzhledem k historickému kontextu (vznik a zánik kolonií, světové války, ekonomická krize), setkáme se s velmi podobnými prvky podpory a kontroly islámu ze strany francouzského státu.

Abstract:

This work is dealing with the evolution of relationship between the French state and Muslims, who came to France from former French colonies. The work focuses primarily on the Muslims, who came to France from the lands of Maghreb (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia) and the period of time of establishing the colonies (1830) till present time. This relationship is observed from three perspectives, which were defined by Marcel Maussen, they are: colonialism, stage of arrangements for guest workers and stage of citizenship. In addition I focus on the ways, how the Muslim immigrants and their offspring are integrated in the French society. Data, which I work with, have mostly secondary character. It is primarily the scientific articles, further the French media. I also work with information obtained by the communication with Toulouse imam. I chose the historical process research in my work because of the evolution of the behavior in time and the character of my work. I have chosen the event – structure analysis as a methodology of the research. The Ethno program was chosen to analyze the obtained data. The results of the analysis show that Islam was in all observed periods used and a tool of control and assimilation. In the period of colonialism the Muslim faith in its original nature was suppressed and the Muslims were turned to the French values. In the age of arrangements for guest workers the Islam was on the French territory supported to preserve the relationship of the temporary immigrants to their homeland. In recent decades the Islam is supported in the way, which contributes to the assimilation of new coming Muslim immigrants and primarily of new generation of Muslims in the French society. Although, individual stages differ from their historical perspective (establishing the colonies and its downfall, world wars and economical crises) we may found very similar components of support and control of Islam from the French state.
