Testing of cognitive functions in Alzeimer disease and their pharmacological treatment

Abstract:

Alzheimerova choroba je onemocnění, které se v posledních desetiletích dostalo do centra zájmu vědeckých pracovníků, zejména díky vzrůstajícímu počtu pacientů s touto chorobou. To souvisí se stárnutím populace obzvláště ve vyspělých zemích. Tato diplomová práce je rozdělena na tři části. První teoretická část shrnuje současné poznatky o tomto onemocnění, diskutována je epidemiologie, rizikové faktory, anatomické změny a klinický obraz pacientů s Alzheimerovou chorobou. Dále je rozebrána diagnostika tohoto onemocnění. Teoretickou část uzavírá kapitola věnující se současným léčebným prostředkům pro pacienty s Alzheimerovou nemocí. Druhá část je věnována samotnému výzkumu na pacientech. Cílem bylo zjistit změny kognitivních funkcí během jednoho roku u pacientů, kteří jsou léčeni. Do výzkumu bylo zařazeno 12 pacientů s Alzheimerovou chorobou, kteří byli sledováni pomocí testů MMSE a ADAS – Cog. Výsledkem pozorování bylo zjištění, že během sledovaného období nedošlo u pacientů k žádným výrazným změnám. Při porovnání s pacienty přijímajícími placebo byly výsledky léčených pacientů lepší v testu MMSE, avšak toto tvrzení nebylo prokázáno v testu ADAS – Cog. Poslední částí této diplomové práce je prezentace pro žáky střední školy, která shrnuje současné poznatky o Alzheimerově chorobě ve vhodném rozsahu.

Abstract:

Alzheimer’s disease has become the focus of scientific interest over the last few decades, in particular due to increasing number of patients diagnosed with the disease. This development is related to ageing of population especially in developed countries. This thesis is divided into three parts. The first theoretical part summarizes current findings about the disease and also epidemiology, risk factors, anatomical changes and clinical features of patients with Alzheimer’s disease are discussed. Furthermore, the disease diagnostics is examined. The theoretical part is rounded off with a chapter dedicated to contemporary medical treatment of the disease. The second part is dedicated to actual clinical trial which aimed at ascertaining of changes in cognitive functions at medically treated patients during one year. The clinical trial has incorporated 12 patients with Alzheimer’s disease who were monitored by means of MMSE and ADAS – Cog tests. The outcome of the observation was a finding that there were no significant changes with patients during the monitoring period. When compared with patients taking placebo, MMSE test pointed to better results of medically treated patients, yet the assertion was not proven in the ADAS – Cog test. The last part of this thesis is a presentation for high-school students, which summarizes current findings about Alzheimer’s disease in an adequate extent.
