The Relationship of Private Galleries in Prague with Their Collectors

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce si klade za cíl analyzovat vztah vybraných pražských soukromých galerií s jejich kupci a sběrateli a zodpovědět na výzkumnou otázku, zda mezi nimi existuje vztah, který by bylo možné označit jako exkluzivní. V teoretické části práce jsou definovány pojmy související s daným tématem. Nejprve je popsán trh umění – jeho jednotlivé segmenty a zákonitosti – pro pochopení, jaké místo má na tomto trhu právě soukromá galerie. Následně je definována soukromá galerie, její cíle a fungování, marketing, návštěvníci a konkurence. Dále je popsána historie sběratelství na našem území, základní pojmy pojící se sběratelstvím a sběratelský trh. Pro praktickou část práce byl zvolen kvalitativní výzkum formou rozhovorů s majiteli či zástupci vybraných galerií na straně jedné a kupci a sběrateli umění na straně druhé. V případě rozhovorů s galeristy se práce soustředí na jejich přístup ke kupcům a sběratelům, v situaci rozhovorů s kupci a sběrateli se práce zaměřuje na jejich vztah k soukromým galeriím obecně – proč u nich nakupují či nenakupují umělecká díla. V této části práce jsou popsány jednotlivé rozhovory a informace, které díky nim byly nabyty. Na základě získaných dat je zhodnocen vztah vybraných pražských soukromých galerií s jejich kupci – sběrateli a zodpovězena výzkumná otázka.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis aims to describe the relationship of selected Prague private galleries with their buyers and collectors and answer the question if there is a relationship between them that could be described as exclusive. The theoretical part of the thesis defines the terms related to the topic. The art market is described first – its individual segments and laws – to understand where does private gallery’s place in this market. Furthermore, the private gallery, its goals and functioning, marketing, visitors and competition are defined. Subsequently, the history of collecting in our country, the basic concepts associated with collecting and the collecting market are described. For the practical part of the work, qualitative research was chosen in the form of interviews with owners or representatives of selected galleries on the one hand and selected art buyers and collectors on the other. In the case of interviews with gallerists, the work focuses on their approach to buyers and collectors, in the situation of interviews with buyers and collectors, the work focuses on their relationship to private galleries in general - why they buy or do not buy works of art from them. In this part of the work are described individual interviews and information that was acquired thanks to them. Based on the obtained data, the relationship of selected Prague private galleries with their buyers and collectors is evaluated and a research question is answered.
