Individualism and poverty

Abstract:

Ústředním tématem této bakalářské práce je chudoba a společenské pohledy na ni. Vzhledem k teoretickému pojetí má práce deskriptivně-normativní charakter. Hlavní otázkou textu je, proč jsou lidé chudí a jaká vysvětlení se v této souvislosti uvádějí. Společným prvkem je individualismus a s ním spojované „nové“ podoby chudoby. První část práce se zaměřuje na teoretické vymezení konceptu chudoby v souvislosti se změnou společnosti. Zabývá se jejím vývojem a příčinami měnících se společenských pohledů na ni. Druhá část textu pojednává o konceptech obviňování chudých či systému z politického, ekonomického a morálního hlediska v souvislosti s distributivní spravedlností. Třetí část je zaměřena na požadavek univerzality jako paradoxu ve společnosti rozrůzněnosti. Zároveň je aplikací konceptů obviňování chudých či jejich ospravedlňování v současném diskursu chudoby, který je ovlivněn nedostatkem pracovních míst a nehodnotnými formami práce. V závěrečné části je uvedena komparace Wilsonova a Murrayova odlišného pohledu na chudobu (porovnání strukturálních příčin s koncepcí obviňování chudých).

Abstract:

The main topic of this bachelor thesis is poverty and the society’s attitudes towards it. In accordance with its theoretical notion, the thesis is descriptively-normative. The fundamental questions of the text are why people are poor, and what explanations are brought up in this connection. The common factor is individualism and its “new” poverty forms. The first part of the thesis deals with the theoretical definition of the poverty concept in connection with the society’s change. It covers the development and causes of the society’s changing attitudes towards it. The second part focuses on the blaming the poor and blaming the system concepts from the political, economical and moral points of view in connection to the distributive justice. The third part deals with the universality claim as a paradox of the diversified society. At the same time, it is applied in the form of the concepts of blaming the poor or their justification in the contemporary poverty discourse, affected by lack of labour places and by worthless labour forms. The final part covers the comparison of diverse poverty concepts by Wilson and Murray (the comparison of structural causes to the blaming the poor concept).
