Critical phases of the European integration process

Abstract:

Vybudování Evropské unie lze v souhrnu označit jako úspěšný integrační proces. Během téměř sedmi desítek let se podařilo v podstatné části evropského kontinentu vytvořit hospodářskou a měnovou unii, ze šesti zakládajících členů dnes funguje sestava EU28 a většina členských zemí přijala společnou měnu euro. Integrace Evropy však není souvislý bezproblémový proces a cílem této diplomové práce je poukázat na kritické momenty, které se objevují v jeho průběhu. Dokonce lze říci, že některé problémy se objevují již v prvních fázích, např. opakované zamítání vstupu nového člena, kterým byla Velká Británie. Mezi další krizové stavy lze považovat neúspěch obranného společenství, vzpouru Francie formou „prázdných židlí“, neúspěšná klíčová referenda, a situace, které jsou mimořádně aktuální – masová imigrace z třetích zemí a právě probíhající Brexit – vystoupení Velké Británie z Evropské unie.

Abstract:

The construction of the European Union can be regarded as a successful integration process. Over the last seven decades, an economic and monetary union has been established in a substantial part of the European continent, with the EU as a constituent of today's 6 founding members28 and most Member States have adopted the euro as the common currency. The integration of Europe is not a continuous problem-free process and the aim of this diploma thesis is to point out the critical moments that appear in its course. It can even be said that some problems are already in the early stages, such as the repeated rejection of the entry of a new member of the United Kingdom. Other failures include the failure of the defense community, the revolt of France in the form of "empty chairs", a failed key referendum, a situation of extraordinary upheaval - mass immigration from third countries and Brexit just in progress – the UK's appearance in the European Union.
