The influence of short-term modified chamber REST interventions on smartphone use in female UNI students

Abstract:

Meritem bakalářské práce je popis realizace a výsledků pilotní experimentální studie krátkodobých modifikovaných chamber REST intervencí a jejich vlivu na užívání smartphonů u vysokoškolských studentek. Teoretická část vymezuje techniku omezené zevní stimulace, prezentuje dříve realizované výzkumy, jejichž aspekty byly implementovány do prezentované studie a předestírá vybrané součástí digitálního prostředí, smartphony a sociální sítě. Výzkum byl realizován formou kvaziexperimentu. Sběr dat byl rozdělen do dvou na sebe navazujících fází. První fáze obnášela vyplnění dotazníkové baterie (N = 988), ze které vznikl výběrový soubor pro šestitýdenní experiment (N = 98), během něhož byla průběžně sbírána kvantitativní data z dotazníků i z používání smartphonu, v rámci triangulace doplněna o kvalitativní výpovědi. Analýza dat této pilotní studie nepotvrdila signifikantní vliv chamber REST intervencí na redukci užívání smartphonu a sociálních sítí. Byl však prokázán signifikantní pokles dosažených skórů v dotazníkové baterii (PUMP, FoMO, STAI-X2). Kvalitativní výpovědi přinášejí podnětné informace pro potenciální replikaci studie.

Abstract:

Description of the implementation and results of a pilot experimental study of short-term modified chamber REST interventions and their influence on the use of smartphones by university students is the essence of the bachelor thesis. The theoretical part defines the terminological clarification of the chamber REST technique and the presentation of previously conducted research. All those aspects are implemented in the presented study. This part also presents selected components of the digital environment, smartphones and social networks. The study was carried out in the form of quasi-experiment. Data collection was divided into two consecutive phases. The first phase - data collection involved filling in a questionnaire battery (N = 988), which resulted in a sample for six-week experiment (N = 98), during which quantitative data from questionnaires and smartphone use were continuously collected and supplemented by qualitative statements. Data analysis of this pilot study did not confirm the significant effect of chamber REST interventions on the reduction of smartphone use and social network consumption. However, a significant decrease in the achieved scores was demonstrated in the repeated filling of the questionnaire battery (PUMP, FoMO, STAI-X2). Qualitative statements provide an inspiring information for potential replication of the study.
