Gender Analysis of a Sports Magazine "Snow"

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá problematikou zobrazování genderu ve sportovní publicistice, konkrétně se pak věnuje lyžařskému magazínu Snow, který analyzuje z genderové perspektivy. V průběhu práce jsou nejprve analyzovány jednotlivé části časopisu a zjištění jsou potom vztažena k teoretickým základům práce. Celá práce je zarámována teoretickými východisky P. Bourdieuho, zejména jeho chápání vztahové existence dvou genderů, východisky McQuaila chápajícího realitu jako mediální konstrukt a Messnera jako genderově senzitivního sportovního teoretika. Metoda kvalitativní obsahové analýzy mediálního obsahu ukázala na častou přítomnost genderových stereotypů a stereotypní použití jazyka ve všech částech analyzovaného obsahu. Zdánlivá genderová neutralita je přehlušena zneviditelněním žen, případně jejich sexuální objektivizací a glorifikací maskulinní aktivity.

Abstract:

The paper is dealing with problems of gender display in sports journalism. In concrete it analyzes ski magazine Snow with gender perspective. In the course of work are first analyzed the individual components of the magazine and the findings are then related to theoretical foundations. Whole paper is framed by theoretical resources of P. Bourdieu, especially his conception of relationship of two genders, McQuail’s conception of reality as a media construction and Messner as gender-sensitive sports theorist. Method of qualitative content analysis of media showed the frequent presence of gender stereotypes and stereotyped use of language in all parts of the test content. The apparent gender neutrality is overshadowed by women’s invisibility or their sexual objectification and glorification of masculine activity.
